advice re psx controller to arcade joystick mod?

Post by neologix »

hi there. i'm new to these forums, but i've been following ben's awesome work since reading abt the first x360 laptop.

my questions today are abt modding a psx controller. i plan on modding said controller to become an arcade joystick and documenting it on my site's blog. i got the classic psx controller to start simple, and once i get this working properly will later do it w/a ps2 dual-shock controller.

...ahem. anyways, i'm using happ parts (joystick, eight regular pushbuttons, white and black "player 1" pushbuttons for start & select) which haven't arrived yet. from a couple other sites i've seen that have modded controllers, the controller's pcb is soldered to wire that connects to the pushbuttons. how much solder per connection is too much? should i leave a little bit of extra wire exposed for any reason at the connection above the solder?

the controller's model is scph-1080. does anyone happen to have pictures of that particular controller modded? the only definitive pics i can find of a modded classic psx controller are at http://www.arcadefever.net/MYPROJECT/PSX/PSX.html (and the hand-drawn text looks quite terrible).

also, does anyone have any tips to give abt doing an arcade controller mod (besides the standard "use female quick-disconnects for easier handling" and "connect all the grounds to each other in series for less mess" tips, which are still great tips)?

i'm definitely using happ parts for this mod, but is there a clear-cut top choice among arcade joysticks and pushbuttons? among mame control panels, besides happ i also keep seeing sanwa, seimitsu (usually for specialized pushbuttons), and a varied mix of those using convex and those using concave.

i know this sounds like a lot, but i'm quite psyched to do this mod and i'm practicing my soldering skills on a plain pcb (i have almost 75ft of 22-gauge wire and abt 1.5oz spool of solder). thanks in advance to anyone taking the time to help me in this endeavor :)

hiya from Oz neologix ,

in my experience and knowledge its best to use SCPH-1080 PSX Controllers as the Analogues sometimes cause problems

Sanwa is top of the line for arcade controls and pushbuttons

Good Luck with your attempt with 'Pad Hacking' and 'Arcade Joystick Mod'

checkout this site it is the king of Arcade Stick making (go in the Tech Section for Tips etc....)
