To offer PS2 support, the had to include the PHYSICAL PS2 CPU with the PS3.

No they did not, they used emulation in some models. ;) At least I think so...

You guys are assuming that companies add BC for that "small but vocal" group of gamers, but to be honest, a LOT of consoles are bought for kids by the parents. When that happens, the parents very, very often go for "The one that plays the games they already have". Part of this is not grasping that the new console will rarely make the old games better, and part of it is cost savings, but a ton of my buddies who got consoles for Christmas in the past few years got a 360, a PS3, or a Wii from their parents, depending on what they already had.

It also lets them do things like they did with the GBC, stating that they have 600 games at launch, or some nonsense like that.

You are correct about that Palmer. The 80GB version originally came out with backwards compatibility through emulation.

ok

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PS3" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; look at the chart

the first ones came with hardware "emulation", then they came with software emulation, then no support.

That's fine that you feel that way, but I disagree. It is obvious that this just isn't that sought after of a feature, because they dropped it (and MS is no longer bothering with it either). If it were something their customer-base was clamoring for they would have included it. Believe me. If half their customer base wanted this, it would be in there...

The Wii probably wouldn't have it either if it weren't little more than a glorified Gamecube.

The thing that is being overlooked here is that all 3 of these companies have online marketplaces where many retro games are now available. So they can make many (not all obviously) games available this way AND make money on them. So in a way it is in their interest to not provide BC, because it doesn't make them money whereas their online marketplaces do.

I know I keep harping on this, but at the end of the day all of these companies are in business to make money. BC doesn't really do anything significant to contribute to this goal.
