Need help - genesis controller to 25pin serial port MOD

Post by Sega_Freak »

Hi guys,

I've heard about a lot of people modding their nes/snes controllers so they can connect them to the old 25 pin printer serial ports in their computers. I decided to try it out with a genesis controller but there isn't nearly as much info online. I found the following plans on a number of websites:
Attachments
These plans seem to be for making a DB9 to DB25 adapter where you plug the genesis controller into the DB9 end. I assumed you don't even need the adapter and can wire the genesis controller directly to the DB25. I cut open the Genesis DB9 female end figured out which colors go to which pins and used these plans as a guide to solder the wires from the genesis cable directly to the DB25. Does anyone know if this would cause any problems? You wouldn't think so because adapter or not essentially the electrical currents end up at the same pins on the DB25. The reason I'm asking is because I followed these plans to a tee and it didn't work for me. Some buttons worked but they weren't doing what they were supposed to (i.e. left was right, right was left). The second time around, I decided to solder individual pins to the ends of all the wires/diodes and try to individually connect them directly to the 25 pin Port on my computer. I played around with different combinations and found that I got closer to the actual thing than any plans I found online. These were my findings:

Genesis wires:---------DB25 pin

White (C button)---------2
Yellow (Right)-----------10
Orange (Left)-----------11
Brown (Up)-------------12
Red (Down)-------------13
Blue (B button)----------15

I must have tried over 100 combos and couldn't figure out how to get the A button and the Start Button to work.

Has anyone Ever modded their genesis controller in this way and got it to work? If so please post how you did it here. I would appreciate it a lot. I've been working very long at this :(

Thanks!

Thanks!

Yeah, I am using the 7 diodes that the diagram shows. I don't mind that I cut the genesis controller because I don't own a genesis anymore and I only wanted a controller for my PC but unfortunately it didn't work =(

Do pins 18 and 19 on the DB25 need to be soldered together? and then the wire needs to be soldered to them? because that's what I did for that part. Perhaps that's the problem?

Anyone know how to make genesis controller to Parallel port?

Post by Sega_Freak »

Hey Everyone,

I've been trying to make a genesis controller to have a DB25 end to plug into my PC's parallel port for a while now. I followed these schematics shown below but I can't seem to get them to work. I've checked that my wiring and soldering is okay and cathode ends of the diodes are facing away from DB25 connector, my parallel port and genesis controller is working, and I have the correct driver installed. Everything seems to be okay but I can't all the buttons to work! I've spent more time than I should have trying to figure this out =\ so I'm hoping someone out there has actually made one of these that worked!!! Please let me know! I would appreciate it a lot! Thanks.

Your motherboard's parallel port might be in a different mode or incompatible with the pinout you're using. I'm not sure which mode works best with the parallel port controllers, but just look around on the net, and you should find something.

If you can't get it working, you should buy one of these.

Probably the best controller I ever used. It feels like the Genesis controller, except even better. One of my friends bought me one off that same place, it's the official Sega one with the box. The whole box is in Japanese.

genesis controller mod question

Post by Sega_Freak »

hi i am trying to mod a genesis controller to work on my pc. the only information I could find online is how to make this adapter:

Is the adapter even necessary or can you directly wire the genesis cable to the db25. also for pins 18 and 19 do i just solder them together and connect the 8th wire from the genesis anywhere on the soldered 18th and 19th pin? thanks!
