Toshiba Satellite laptop problem

Post by Xc3ll3rator »

I've posted on this subject before. I am in the process of making a digital picture frame and I'm stuck. I have a ribbon cable that attaches to the floppy drive that I need to upload pics and I want to avoid using a LAN connection. I plan to copy the pics I want to the floppy disk and save them on the hard drive, even though it's only like 215 MB. Oh yeah, I also want to avoid making solders or placing a circuit board in the middle of the connection. I said this because I found a similiar ribbon cable on an old, old laptop used for accounting, etc. One end has the exact amount of connections I need but the other end is the same way. The cable that was on the Toshiba is big on one end and small on the other, but they both have 26 connections. Anyway here are some pics of the project and the connection problem.

I have no idea what you're trying to do. Please explain again, this time with clarity. ;) If you want to transfer the images over the laptop's floppy connection somehow, it won't work. You'd need something like a null modem cable to transfer files without a NIC, but that's going to run at 9600 baud (read: very very slowly).

Why not use a laptop hard drive to CompactFlash adapter? 1 GB CF cards are dirt cheap, and you can plug it right into your other PC via a card reader to handle images. Just throw a simple DOS installation and a 20k DOS image viewer on there and you're good to go.

Adapter - $30 link
DOS - $0 link
Image viewer - $0 link

What do you mean? Use the same connection as the hard drive and share it with the CF reader?

No, replace the hard drive with the CF reader. It will use less power, and will be absolutely silent.

CompactFlash is pin-compatible with IDE. You just need the adapter to make it fit.
