Upgrading Unibody Macbook RAM

Post by limpport »

Does anyone know if it will void the warranty? The whole bottom of the computer has to be removed in order to upgrade the ram. Will this void it?

And yes, I did try Google. :P

Don't try Google... Try the warranty certificate that came with the computer. Or Apple's support line.

Re: Upgrading Unibody Macbook Pro RAM

The computer has not been bought yet. It's actually my girlfriend who is getting the Macbook, and I'm trying to help her decide between the white Macbook, or the 13" Pro.

All I can find on Apple's site is how to upgrade ram in older Pro's, but not the newer ones. There was something about replacing the battery here. It says not to replace the battery yourself, but also says you can damage the product, and that damage isn't covered by warranty, so it seems very unclear. The warning against replacing the battery I think is just because their Li-Po's.

I'll call Apple tomorrow, I think, unless someone else knows.

I watched a video tutorial on how to upgrade the RAM, it doesn't look like it would be anything that should void the warranty. Checking with Apple is still your best bet though.

It shouldn't.

The only computer manufacturer I know of that had an "upgrading RAM voids your warranty" policy was ASUS on the original Eee laptop, and they reversed that decision shortly after launch.

I upgraded a hard drive in one last week, it doesn't void the warranty as long as you don't screw anything up :P It's just 10 phillips screws, and the RAM is right there. You need a smaller torx bit (don't remember specifically...) if you want to swap the hard drive, as it has a bracket to attach!

Great! Apple said that as long as anything doesn't break, then it is a-ok! My girlfriend ordered the Pro today! Thank you everyone!

Black Six, I am in need of your services, or do you not come onto F42?
