My 360 RRoD'ed in June of 2007. I got it fixed and it's been fine ever since.jleemero wrote:Microsoft WILL fix it, so let them.
The only time you should fix your own console is if you've either voided the warranty, or if the warranty is up.
M$ will basically fix just about any RRoD.
Just don't expect it to last very long.
I have yet to see a single RRoD repair last for more than a year before either E74, or another RRoD.

Okay. Do NOT try to fix it yourself. Microsoft offers a FREE 3 year warranty against RRODs. You ARE covered. Call them!

Re: oh my god....i just the red ring of death : (
ok, thanks for all he help, (well, most of it) i just called microsoft but they don't have any operators until 9am (7am right now)
so can anyone tell me how long it takes for microsoft to repair/replace it? as i understand it they post me the box to post it back to them, then they post it back to me, so thats a minimum of about 9 days postage right there, plus however long it takes them to do their thing.
and as i understand it, when microsoft "repair" a broken 360, they just put it back to how it was, they don't make sure it won't happen again, wheras the xclamp more or less fixes it (the 3 red light problem) forever.
also does anyone know how much it costs to get microsoft to fix it? if it's free then fair enough but if i have to pay for a "repaired" console thats only gonna do the same thing again 2/3 years down the line, then wouldn't it be better to xclamp it myself?
yeah, sorry for "babying", i play my Xbox Elite pretty much non stop and to just have it die like that, well, bit of a kick in the balls at 11:30pm ; )
also, does it make a difference if it's an Elite? i've never heard of or seen Elites with the red ring of death and supposedly they used a different kind of glue or something in them to prevent it from happening - obviously doesn't work :S
and btw dopestkideva, piss off, i started this thread to find help with a problem not start yet ANOTHER retarded console wars. i didn't get a ps3 because the ps3 sucks - for me! i'm sure to many people the ps3 is the better console for them, but for me it isn't, there would be absolutely no point me getting a ps3 since it just isn't aimed at gamers like me, theres only 2 things - from my point of view - that is reason to get a ps3, 1: Unreal Tournament 3 is way better on it than 360 and actually has downloadable content, and 2: Little Big Planet looks awesome. thats it. i'm sure for gamers such as yourself having custom soundtrack on any game isn't important, for me it is, as is a hundred other issues i can't even be bothered to go into.
and it wasn't a true statement, considering the insane amount of people who've had worse problems with their ps3s
there is only 1 truth regarding console wars, and that is this:
GOD HATES CONSOLE FANBOYS!!!

Re: oh my god....i just the red ring of death : (
I think my cousins' XBox took a month or so, but you may not know this: you DON'T get back your same XBox. You send in an Elite, they'll send you back an Elite, but it won't be the same one. That is why you need to keep your faceplate and hard drive. I think Elites take longer to get back, though, because they are less common; their turnaround isn't as quick because of it.Render wrote:so can anyone tell me how long it takes for microsoft to repair/replace it? as i understand it they post me the box to post it back to them, then they post it back to me, so thats a minimum of about 9 days postage right there, plus however long it takes them to do their thing.
They charge about $100, I think. I'd still send it in and get it fixed for free; in 2/3 years, you might be playing the games on your 720 anyway...Render wrote:also does anyone know how much it costs to get microsoft to fix it? if it's free then fair enough but if i have to pay for a "repaired" console thats only gonna do the same thing again 2/3 years down the line, then wouldn't it be better to xclamp it myself?
Nope. In fact, Ben said something about Elites being more susceptable because they don't sell as quickly, so new chipsets (Jasper, etc) take longer to implement than in other SKUs.Render wrote:also, does it make a difference if it's an Elite? i've never heard of or seen Elites with the red ring of death and supposedly they used a different kind of glue or something in them to prevent it from happening - obviously doesn't work :S

For me it took about two or three weeks, it was pretty quick as I recall. And yes, as long as you're under warranty it's absolutely free.

My friend's 360 took about 2 weeks to get fixed. His had the e74 error, which they now fix for free.
If you still have your warranty, send it in. The only reason to try to fix it yourself is if the warranty is expired/voided.

Re: oh my god....i just the red ring of death : (
Forget about the phone crap. Go onto Microsoft's support site and register your 360, it'll tell you if it's still under warranty, and then choose the option to have them ship a box out to you.
Mine just left UPS for RROD repairs yesterday.

Re: oh my god....i just the red ring of death : (
Are you next to a repair center? Think about it: 1 day for them to send you an overnight box, 1 day to send it back, and 1 day to get your new 360? Last I checked, that is 3 days, and that assumes no delays whatsoever.
Any cites on this "2 days for Canada" policy?

I got my box on the third day, so there was my two days just waiting for the box. Why do you have to be soo unbelievable, HotDog-Cart? If you're going to lie, just make it closer to the truth.
Someone might believe you then.

Re: oh my god....i just the red ring of death : (
Here's the lowdown:
Microsoft just puts another crap board that will just red-ring again because nothing is changed, but if you want to send it in (?for free?) every year, that's an option.
I wouldn't recommend doing the X-Clamp replacement yourself because most people copulate it up unless they've done quite a few. A co-worker thought he would be hot crap and do it without my supervision and his E-74'd a week later and over half of the systems he fixed have come back totally copulate.
I do console repair at my local Play N Trade and I've fixed probably over 100 RROD 360's, if you want I could fix it for you for $50+shipping...well...if its a 3 light, if its one light I'm not touching it and if its 2 light you're better off getting a new board (Microsoft repair in other words) because I'll have to cut the temperature sensor and I don't know how long it will last once that has been done (I've just started doing that and haven't had a long term sampling yet). If its a 4 light, you're stupid and you need to plug your A/V cable in, lol. I can tell you right now I probably have more experience with this and will take more care than anyone else that will offer to fix it for you, and as an added bonus if it doesn't work you only pay shipping. However, don't remove the warranty label because once that's gone, I'm not touching it. Oh, and did I mention I'm 12 credit hours away from being a degreed Mechanical Engineer? yeah, that too. Don't let computer science/electrical engineers fool you, this repair is totally a mechanical engineer's domain.
