Gamecube Idea/Questions
Me and kazaryster were sitting down and looking at people's gamecube portables and how thick they were because of the disc drive. I know people are working on a better way than the HUGE drive that we currently use but if anybody has a "hacked" PSP or PS2 they know you can put ISO's of games onto Memory sticks/Flash drives and play them on the console without much use of the disk drive altogether. The Gamecube has been exploited in many ways including running linux so in theory could or could we not just run ISO's of games on the Gamecube through linux or just tricking it into reading off of an external memory device. (May include major modding)
I'm far from getting all this portabalizing stuff but does that sound possible to any of you Pros out there?

You ever hear the phrase that starts with "If you have to ask..." ? Just out of curiosity.

Re: Gamecube Idea/Questions
I've heard the idea mentioned a lot actually. Plenty of modchips out there that are good at tricking the GC. I'll prolly start playing around with the idea with my Viper GC when I get more experience. Also, to branch off that idea, could the gamecube be tricked into using a DVD laser??? I doubt it but maybe...
When the PSP is hacked to play ISO files, all it needs is any UMD disc to play any of those ISOs. Perhaps the same concept can be applied to the GC...

Re: Gamecube Idea/Questions
not the electric rain one. its a wii modchip which replaces the disc drive with a usb port to stream games from a computer to the wii. its supposedly gamecube compatible. i bet it could be modded into a sd card booter thing

Re: Gamecube Idea/Questions
I can shed a bit of light:
The FlatMii is, in theory, GC compatible. It can certainly work with a wii motherboard, though. Right now, that is the only real option. Unfortunately, it needs an X86 powered computer to stream the ISO.
The good news is that the wii has a USB ISO loader that loads off any external USB hard drive now. It only works with Wii ISOs right now, but according to the guy who made it, a GC version is entirely possible, and may be added at some point if nobody else makes one first.
I am going to wait and see where that goes before making a GCp, a lot of options are opening up.

Excellent
Re: Gamecube Idea/Questions
So, in theory, we could scrap the GC motherboard, and create a portable entirely from the Wii that would act as a GC portable??? (warning: if yes, then numerous questions will follow).

Re: Gamecube Idea/Questions
Well, the wii is only an advanced gamecube with a "wave 'em around" (who said that?) controller. It is already pretty much a gcp, but it needs the wiimote to access a gc game.

Re: Gamecube Idea/Questions
Yes. I have a spare wii I will try this with, making a dedicated GCp/Virtual Console/Wiiware console with no disc drive.Tchay wrote:So, in theory, we could scrap the GC motherboard, and create a portable entirely from the Wii that would act as a GC portable??? Some people have been working on a full replacement for the wii menu, right now it can only run the homebrew channel, run GC/Wii games, and change some settings. From talking to the people who are making it, once it is stable, it could be a good replacement frontend.
As for starting the game, the replacement menu supports the GC controller! I will see how it goes, but if it does get finished, that menu would allow for a GC controller to operate the menu, VC games, GC games, and the wii games that support the GC controller (All the good ones, to be honest.)
Any other questions?

Excellent
Re: Gamecube Idea/Questions
nope! Im good. But thats excellent news! I hope this doesnt void my GC portable project, I was getting excited about tht thing
But then again, maybe ill just continue it on the wii. Oh and I emailed the website with the flatmii and they told me that the modchip can indeed run GC games (I guess you kinda already said that, but just for clarity).
Re: Gamecube Idea/Questions
Not to be a smart @$$ but no I actually haven't.jjhammerstein wrote:You ever hear the phrase that starts with "If you have to ask..." ? Just out of curiosity.
Actually if you go into the settings by pressing select while on the XMB you can set it to the point where no UMD disc what so ever is required that is why some people replace the drive with a fan and still play gamesTchay wrote:I've heard the idea mentioned a lot actually. So people already beat me to the punch on this idea I guess, or at least are working on it.

dude thats pretty sweet! If I ever get back into the PSP modding world, I will keep tht in mind
Back on topic tho - When I get some more cash, I will buy a wii mobo and the FlatMii to do some testing, BUT I think its probably a good idea to hold off on the FlatMii for a few more months to let the makers of the chip work out any issues. But in the near future, this wii method could very well replace GC portablizing.
