Genesis 3 power question/ modding ideas...
Hi all. I found a very very cheap Genesis 3 and looking to mod it with a power LED and dilly around with the power to see what I can do without a brick AC cable. What would be the harm in de-soldering the old transistor off and just wire in a new 2N4401 Transistor on to it? wouldn't it supply the power needed? Im sure the power brick sends the correct voltage and mA to the unit but is there any other way to regulate it? I know it probably wont be very good to do this but will it just fry it? Just a question. thanks!
Also planning on AV/S-Video modding it and any other cool mods would be awesome to know about.. so lay it on me. I'm still wanting to be able to use the 32x on it as well but cant find the plans on how the one guy that did it. Some wires added or some jazz.

The Genesis 3 is incompatible with the 32X. I don't know that you can just hack it to make it work.
Re: Genesis 3 power question/ modding ideas...
Wow, your power theory is totally screwed up. But try it anyway, and post a video of the sparks and fire.
Re: Genesis 3 power question/ modding ideas...
ok, well isnt this the way that the Nintendo gets its juice when done hand held by Ben Heck? I know im not right on, but my thoughts are that the Nintendo has a brick and yet it works from the 7805 regulator.. whoops, its not the 2n4401 like i came to the conclusion of briefly looking it up in his book. since it has 5 volts regulated it probably wouldn't work since the sega brick sends 10v .85mAs to the plug. ugh.. sorry for bothering you guys with such nuttiness..
and the 32x genesis 3 looks from this vid to have a fix somewhere..

If you want to do away with the brick, you're going to need to pop open a brick, take out that large, heavy voltage transformer, and somehow integrate it inside the G3 casing. There is another option, though. There are new lightweight AC adapters with more efficient switching regulators inside. Those are a lot smaller, and would be far easier to integrate right into the G3.
As for the S-Vid, it's not something you can get it straight off the output jack. Here's the pinout. In fact, I'm not sure the G3 could do it, as it doesn't have the encoder chip that the G1 does. I sold my G3 a while back, so I can't open it up and take a look at it. It was totally useless to me, since it wasn't 32X compatible, and I already have more Genesis systems than I do games.

I know about the S-Video mod from here

Hopefully I have the chip for it on mine. Havent checked it yet but if anything I will defiantly put the AV on there.
Where could I get one of these light AC Brick things from so I can install it in my Gen 3 unit?
Thanks all.

And that SVid link shows a feasible theory but did it ever pan out?
Lemme know what you find. I wanna see if I can use my 32X with a Nomad.
copulate all you goddamn smartasses.
Re: Genesis 3 power question/ modding ideas...
i think they state that it wont work on the nomad still but somehow the genesis 3 it has been fixed. the guy that did it wont say how, wanker, so for now its still a guestimate..
This is what I went on..

And I will let you know about the s-video. I have all the stuff to do it today so Ill try. I want an S-video'd genny damnit!

Oh, so I am not the only one who knows that the g3 can be made to work with the 32x? I can't find how to do it, but it has been done.
rest in peace, Ronnie James Dio! \m/
Re: Genesis 3 power question/ modding ideas...
or so its seen in a video.. I trust videos like I trust free pr0n sites.. they all have hidden meaning of corruption. I think they have another Genesis behind the tele with the same game in it and someone to the right of the camera is pressing start at the same time.. it seems goofy that the guy that did it would "APOXY" the system together again so he cant show anyone how its done.. please someone like the mythbusters break this silliness or show the devil for all to see!

Re: Genesis 3 power question/ modding ideas...
I am intrigued, but even if i could get my 32X working on a g3, doing so has kinda lost its purpose. I just acquired a g1/Cd combo, and I'd really like to do Rekarp's Neptune mod to it.
As for the AC thing I was talking about, there's two sources you could get the part. First, you could find a power adapter that outputs 9v or 10v. It's going to be smaller and slimmer than the regular power brick, and a LOT lighter in weight. Radio Shack may have them, or perhaps a computer accessories place. I could take a look on-line ad see what I find. Your second option is to order the switching regulator right from Digi-Key or Mouser. In fact, I just picked up some myself from Digi-key, so I can redo the power lines on my g1 setup so every unit uses one power cord.

I wish that jerkwad would post how he did it...
Re: Genesis 3 power question/ modding ideas...
Tibia, I would love to figure out how you do the switching regulator to get both units to run off of one power cord. please post or show me a link.. interesting idea as I have both model 1 Sega cd model 1 and model 2 and Sega cd model 2. im a sick collector with no other vices.
cheers
The Gen 3 does look incredibly stupid with the 32x on top..
hackmodford, are you talking about stereo sound from the Gen3 as it has the same port that they have on gen model 2 and cdx which i believe already has a left and right side.. The first model is easy to get stereo from, as I spliced off the headphone jack.

Re: Genesis 3 power question/ modding ideas...
s-video confirmed not working (for me at least) after hooking up a 75ohm resistor to a 200uf capacitor then to the Y/C.. bogus (I will try again later today). I was really looking forward to it as I could never get my Genesis 1 or 2 to spit a good S-video image either..
