DaBeast: No, X-Box DVDs use UDF that is encrypted, only the HD and 'memory cards' use FATX. With a modded X-Box (probably even soft-modded) you can use a standard PATA DVD-ROM, including laptop drives. I've seen one page detail that you can use another DVD-ROM if you keep the logic board from the orginal drive hooked up.
Laptop HDs will work. Additionally, your details are out of date, check the xbox-scene forums instead of the Tutorials page, as most are obsolete. You can lock and unlock many HDs if you have the right data, and you can get that data from software launched from hacked save games.

I think dkap (whatever his name is, built the green xboxp) said that the original drive has a jumper that shorts a couple pins on the power cable so that it know it is an xbox drive. I think he just found out what needed to be shorted and then he didn't need the drive/could use another.tom61 wrote:With a modded X-Box (probably even soft-modded) you can use a standard PATA DVD-ROM, including laptop drives. Anything that works in debian can be used in DSL, you just have to learn how to use Apt-get/synaptiec or how to install libraries from the internet.Hackmodford wrote:Yes,

I got gtkpod to work but it messed up my iPods DB because it's the fifth generation one.
Can someone compile a newer gtkpod extension for DSL please

Then use apt-get, you need an internet connection to it though...or if you don't like typing everything in use synaptic.Hackmodford wrote:Question... can I do that if I download the files myself and take them to the xbox? I don't have internet for the xbox.
My problem with Debian was I couldn't figure what file I needed to actually download.
with DSL I just download the extensions from the list... really simple.
Hope that explains my situation.

Re: X-Book (XBox Laptop)
Don't know much about that. Never heard about it, but certainly possible. Perhaps someone else knows.
One problem you're going to run across is this: if you keep the DVD drive intact, you will not be able to keep it only 2 inches thick (without screen). The DVD drive itself is over 1.5 inches thick on its own. It might be possible without the DVD drive, if you use a laptop HDD or CompactFlash card for game storage, and then you can just make the DVD drive external. That way, you can still copy games and music onto it.
You will, however, need to flash the TSOP to do away with the drive.

Yes, but you are forgetting to consider the thickness of the XBox motherboard. There aren't any 'flat' spots because of capacitors and heatsinks and the like.

Re: X-Book (XBox Laptop)
I understand what you're saying there, but that will be a huge footprint! Putting the DVD drive alongside the motherboard with increase the width by more than 5 inches. Even if you get back some space by using a picoPSU instead of the internal PSU, you still will end up with the unit being several inches wider than a stock XBox.
The XBox motherboard in somewhere in the neighborhood of 8-9 inches square. If you put the drive beside it, your minimum footprint is probably 9 by 14 inches, ignoring the case material thickness, etc.
If you understand this and still wish to proceed, press "Y" now.
Edit:
Also, if you use a laptop hard drive, you can fit it above the XBox motherboard; there is a kind of 'depression' on the left side where there are no heatsinks and such in the way.

Yes, that is. That's nearly 30% larger by volume than the PS3. What do you got, a 20 inch monitor to use?Hackmodford wrote:Now... slow down... I know that's huge (considering how big the motherboard is)
