Labor + cost = Consumer price (loosely.)

The problem with selling portables is that your labor is subject to interpretation. Some of these portables take hundreds of hours. An automotive repair shop (just throwing it out there) will charge about 70 to 90 dollars an hour. So, one hundred hours = $7000.00. An electrical engineer can make close to a hundred an hour or more.

Will anyone pay close to ten thousand dollars for a ps1 or NES or Genesis portable? Of course not. Not really. Therefore, manufacturing and selling portables results in a loss. The only real way around this problem is to figure some way to mass-produce cases quickly, effectively, and cost-efficiently, and to come up with a solution to the problem of prepping console boards for portabalization.

About the most common price I've seen for your average portable is around $500 to $1000; lesser quality goes for less, higher quality can go for much, much more. Ben's laptops, for example. If you could come up with a process to get a portable built in a week on average, and actually sell one per week on average, you could probably make an ok living at it.

I would get a lawyer before you get too serious. There may be legal liabilities involved; private individuals selling these things aren't as legally culpable as a public establishment could be.

The trick is this: you need to figure out (math, ahh!) how much you need to make per week to make it worth your while. Even if you can only get a job at McDonald's, you'd make probably $7 an hour. Can you do this making portables?

Suppose you spend 50 hours making a portable that cost you $250 in supplies. You'd need so get 50(7) + 250 = $600 for the thing. Doable? Maybe. But you also can't just work on it whenever - you'd need to make one a week at least. Doable? Perhaps, but less likely, especially if you keep making the same one.

You really need to do it Ben style - take commissions. That means you can't just make what you want, and you have to put up with demanding customers who will balk at your price on occasion. It also means you need to be very very good at it, because you need to offer a wide variety of systems and mods.

You will also need access to professional equipment. You can make portables without it, but if you want to do this for a living, you need to save time and effort any way you can.

As Ben has showed, making a living by portablizing can be done, but most people find themselves unable to make enough money beyond their costs to compensate them for labor.

And Shock would know - he sells his portables all the time. As he mentioned in his video podcast (vidcast? vcast?), people are all for buying a portable until it's time to pay for it.

Listen to the man.

thank you robm & eagle5953 you were very helpful .
i don't need to make a lot of money out of it (im a kid (13) so i only want to make portables sell them at a price that i make enough profit to buy more supplies and make more of them (and making a couple of bucks along the way :D )

so i can sell them pretty cheap :) (since i don't need a big profit)

so prepare to see my first psnesgenp (tm) on ebay (in about 1 1/2 months (yep i need to finish my year of school first(im home schooled)

see ya :D (have to read a CRAPY badly written book in french    )

In that case, your plan works. Other individuals here do that as well.

Are you sure you want to do a combination of systems portable? That sounds rather difficult for your first try; you might do better to attempt something less complex.

well ya i'll do a hard first progect (i always start with a HARD progect )

but i don't think it's going to be that hard to do. Basically i take a ps1 and hook it up to the batteries screen and controller like in the tutorials things then the same for the noac and the goac put a 4-way toggle switch, probably a guitar one. I have A LOT of experience in electronics and circuits and stuff

my case will be a franken-case (but all nice and smooth with multiple colors

ShockSlayer: you're right there is no pre last gen market :( ...............................

but this is intended for old school gamers that prefers the nes to the ps3 :D (i like old games cuz i wasn't born when they released them  )

Your getting ahead of yourself. Slow down, and realize you won't be able to make money off of this, and, you haven't built a single one yet, so your credibility = none.

Build one, single system portable, and then try to sell it. Beleive me, you will never want to do it again.

What if I bought one of your systems and a few weeks later it dies? Thats what scares me about buying very expensive garage projects from people with no credability. Just my 2 cents :D

i hope ur joking. if not, be prepared to fail on it, because
A: how is that going to be a medium case?!?!? the c64 would be gianormus.
b: not even ben would do a intellivision.
portable. some odd power voltages.
c:who would have the money for this? nobody.
d: do you any experience?!?! look how bad some people's (no offense) portables are, bulky, ugly, multiple screen/systems fried etc...
e:yeah, a good screen = immediate success
f:how would you fit a commodore disk drive in as well? the thing would be bigger than a tv!

seriously, you need to think things through before posting stupid stuff like this. i feel it is worse than if you said you wanted to build a xbox360 laptop...

to all ranters out there, did i do a good rant?
