I'm entirely self-taught on the violin, and it's not too hard to get started. Once you start getting nice notes with the bow, it's more a matter of always holding down the right string at the right point. I already knew how to read music, but the way the violin works is really a lot like how reading music works. Each note on the page has a specific finger position. I guess, I'd strongly recommend it for someone with no experience, because even four year old kids are able to learn.
