Actually, from what I've heard, true audiophiles prefer records, but on some ridiculously expensive equipment. Longevity may be another issue, of course, but I've really enjoyed playing records for the past year or so. Girlfriend and I have been making a bit of a collection.bicostp wrote:Yeah, except records degrade every single time you play them.themadhacker wrote:Well, It looks like I'm going back to records (records FTW!) so I don't have to face a CD rot too.
Music compressed with a lossless algorithm on a Flash drive wins both the quality and longevity contests.

Oh, and JJ I was not making a joke. I think the sound is way better on records, and records look WAY cooler than some piece of sh*t plastic disk.

The have better sound quality than CDs. And more character. But if you want longevity, they are not the way to go. That was the discussion, was it not?

You may think that, but the so-called "warmth" you get from records is caused by the limitations of the format (mostly resonance from the drive system), it's not some special quality only records have. Plus, the needle can't get into every nook and cranny of the groove, so it can't pick everything up. (It actually wears the grooves out a little bit every playback.)themadhacker wrote:I think the sound is way better on records

Don't get me wrong, I like records. But to say it has superior fidelity is complete donkey feces. Even audiocassette is better.

Hey! I still have that exact issue in my basement
But my question is about lossless formats. Are they superior or inferior to cd's?(or records)

@bicostp
I don't care what the studies say, or what you say. I listen to what my ears say and they say records sound better. You may say that since i think records are better I live in the past, and in fact I do. I hate most modern concepts such as digital TV, poopy modern pop, modern TV shows, and just about anyting alse modern. 1990s and before FTW!

Lossless compression doesn't discard anything, so it's as good as what you encode into it. Just like burning a CD, it won't replace the information that was thrown away in the original recording.
CD ripped to lossless codec = sound file that sounds the same as the original CD (CDs are lossless)
32k/sec MP3 transcoded to lossless codec = sound file that sounds like a 32k/sec MP3

I think that it's funny when my friends use their skullcandy headphones and say, "It sounds like I'm at the concert!" when they're listening to mp3's

I've listened to records, and they sound like s*it. But I also think that the N64 is better than the Wii. To each their own.

I have a Victrola in my house for the early 1900s, now music on that really sounds like crap.

It depends on your equipment really. If you have a good stylus and a good set of speakers, then LPs will sound beautiful. An analog format's quality is dependent on how much you are willing to shell out on a player for such a format.XCVG wrote:I've listened to records, and they sound like s*it. The condition of the discs is a pretty major factor, too. If you've got a disc that's been played to death, it's never going to sound as good as a pristine copy.

100% analog playback
It looks to be pretty much the answer for those wanting to preserve their records. It costs $10,000.00. Casual listeners need not apply.

Pricey, and I've heard that the sound quality isn't anything special. Definitely not for $10,000 a pop. If I had that kind of money to burn, I'd buy a car.
