Can this?

Do you have a technical question that doesn't really fit a specific console? Want some general info on electronics, hacking, making cookies, etc? Here's the place to ask! Go nuts.

Can this?

Post by Oniak »

Well Im going to be making a custom game system type thing from a micro atx computer so Im wondering, What emulators can I run with it? Im assuming I can atleast get up to N64.
Specs
P3 computer 800MHz (I might be 950), Geforce 256, Happague WinTV NTSC TV tuner, 8GB HDD, 512MB RAM
Thanks
~Alex
One major reason Im asking this is because someone said
Most modern iterations of emulators use fairly modern features like DX8, various plugin based emu's like PJ64 will also require something a little more up to date. So on that rig you will need to find older versions of most emulators that are more compatible with the hardware.
Version of Mame from 0.107 upward won't work properly on it, and you'll have the same problems with Playstation, N64, and a number of others.
You might be OK with things like Gens, and Snes9x but again, I would expect to experience random errors and/or slowdown with any up to date versions of the emulators because that hardware is just so far out of date now.

If you're looking at using it as a TV based all in one emulator system I think overall you'll be pretty disappointed.

My current dedicated emulation rig that I use with the TV is a 2.1Ghz Athlon 1Gb of Ram and a Geforce7900GS and its just about ok for 99% of stuff, but even then it will experience occasional performance probs. For modern emulators though, I would say this spec is a reasonable minimum for across the board compatibility nowadays.

2Ghz Processor
1Gb Ram
Windows XP
Direct X 9 compatible Videocard.

I've been able to run the latest version of Project 64 with lesser hardware. But with a crap PCI video card from the mid-90s, it ran at about half to a quarter of the original speed. I say for Visual Boy Advance (if you're doing GBA games), you want at least 600MHz, speaking from experience. Here are the Project 64 requirements from emulator-zone:
The system requirements of Project64 are high. Don't expect games to run well or at all if your PC doesn't meet these requirements:

* Pentium III 600 Mhz or better
* 128 Mb. RAM or more
* Fast video card with 16 Mb. Video RAM or more
* Windows 95/98/Me
* DirectX 6.0 (latest version of DirectX recommended)

Project64 works best with these video cards:

* TNT, TNT 2, GeForce, GeForce 2, ATI Radeon

Project64 does not work well with these video cards:

* Matrox G200 and G400 (blending errors)
* ATI Rage Pro (misses some 3D functionality)
* 3DFX Voodoo Banshee (has bad DirectX drivers)
* 3DFX Voodoo 1 or 2 (secondary 3D cards are not supported)

I was able to emulate Playstation and N64 fairly on an old P3 500 comp with 256 MB of RAM and an old 64 MB TNT2 card. It needed older versions of some emulators, but it worked.

Try a few out and see what happens. The worst thing that can happen is the emulator doesn't work. :lol:

Connectix Virtual Game Station ran perfectly on an old 233 mhz P2 laptop I used to have. If no other PSX emulator will work, it will. (It will just take some digging to find, since it was a retail program, the company doesn't exist anymore, and Sony put the kibosh on it after it was on the market for about a year.)
