So, I plan on making an all-in-one Sega machine in a PC case and I've been fooling around with putting a DC drive into a PC CD-Rom drive using the existing hardware. I've gutted a few obsolete CD drives and I've managed to swap the spindle on my DC drive with one from a CD drive that uses the magnetic hub like in a tray load cd drive. The biggest issue I came across here is the diameter of the shaft used in cd drives varies. The Dc one is actually quite a bit smaller than a lot of the ones I've tried. I managed to find one the same size in an old 2X Creative CD drive. It press fit right on and it seems to work.

Seeing your mod makes me want to do it as well only using a Tangerine (to keep with the DC Orange) and either keeping the tray drive or modding the slot load drive if it has one.

Logic, do you have any plans to do another iCast with the second iMac you have? And would you be maybe contemplating using the slot load drive that's in it?

I started working on a slot load, I got it to the point of it taking in disk just fine, but when I eject the disk, it doesn't stop right away.

so the disk kind of falls out. I don't think this is a huge problem, after all, *you* are the one telling it to eject - and its not like it shoots across the room, it just sort of falls down.

Did you transplant the whole DC drive assembly into the slot load drive or take it apart and just replace the motor and laser?

So you have a working slot load DC GD-ROM drive that just ejects poorly? Awesome. Love to see some details of your work (don't feel pressured to make a guide!) just some pics would be dandy. I am still figuring out the logistics of getting the GD-ROM guts into my CD drive and have it work.

I have converted a DC to a tray loading drive by mounting it onto a disc tray and making a circuit to control the tray. http://modsbywerd.blogspot.com/search/label/GD%20drive That is where you can find all of my information and how I did it. Granted its not the prettiest but it works. I hope one of you guys can get the GD-Rom all internalized, that would definitely be the best looking route to go!

Okay, so you did most of what I plan to do, but you scrapped the actual CD drive board and case and just used the frame and tray. Is that right? So that's why you needed to make your own controller circuit. Looks pretty good. I may just scavenge it from you. I'll be sure to credit you if I do.

I think removing the board but keeping the case will allow me enough room. I plan on putting the GD-Rom motor and lens assembly where the CD motor and lens assembly is, but the GD-Rom spindle motor is bigger than a typical CD-Rom motor so it won't clear the controller board in the bottom of the drive when the tray is open and the assembly tilts down. This may be the ticket.

On a side note. When I'm testing the open/close motor on my cd drive, I only have to hook up the +5V & GND but in your worklog you state that you hook up 12V. Would I be able to use +5V instead of +12 with your circuit, and if so, would some of the values of the components change?
