Can this be modded to FINALLY bin the DVD drive?

Yes I have read its for the Wii & yes it needs to be plugged into a PC to stream the data.

BUT..... I know there are some clever people out there who might be able to make/create some nifty software/hardware changes to make this compatible with the Gamecube?

i.e. stream the data from some kind of portable media. SD/CF Hard-drive etc.... (check ER's massive project)

PS - Am fully aware of the "potential for this device to be used for illegal purposes" so its best to add that i do not endorse software piracy - i own legit copies of my games. I, just like the rest of the people who HATE the Gamecube DVD drive will do just about anything to find an alternative to help shrink GC portables. Why oh why did Nintendo make the Gamecube so cube like!!! (Ha)

he did it to a Wii, but I think its supposed to be compatible with the gamecube as well. keep in mind that it does need to be hooked up to a computer, though, as that is what emulates the DVD drive.

It is compatible with the Wii, and can also run GC ISOs on a wii. You could make an epic thin Wii VC/GC handheld, if you wanted.

As for the wii, its DVD drive uses the same data protocol, as far as I know. The wii DVD drive switches into GC mode if the disc grabbers detect a gamecube disc. Considering that that flatmii software client emulates that switch when you load a GC ISO, it would be perfectly plausible to use it on a gamecube with a simple rewiring. Might even be able to find a proper FFC adapter; That would be ideal.

As for modding the gecko, not possible.

I hope the "wiizii" or whatever that SATA thing is turns out to not be vaporware. The pics of it right now are just a standard SATA controller. If that thing turns out to be real, a GC loader might be possible; Then again, it will have the software required for the mode switch onboard....

Either way, the flatmii should be possible. Are there really enough people here interested for me to try?

Does the Wii have the same connector as the GC?

I have opened up a GC though, and that cable is weird. I've checked. There's no data sheets for the thing. You can do the programming, but unless you're keeping it on the Wii you're stuck in dead water from what I believe.
