I Need N64 Controller Advice

Post by Scottery »

My Idea is to mod an N64 controller to have at least 2 leds
and if possible add the rumble from an old ps2 dualshock 2 and replace the thumbstick with the ps2 one

How would I go about doing this?
Are the ps2 things even possible?
Does anybody have labeled diagrams of the insides of the n64 controller

I am really new to this stuff so go easy on me :)

First what are the LED's for, second I'm actually working on replacing the joystick with a ps2 joystick, haven't gotten around to it yet though. I might be able to get to it tonight. Right now it's only confirmed that it works with the official gamecube controller joystick.

I just want it to light up when the system is on, I have one of those clear purple controllers

There are 3 lines going to the n64 controller, 3.3 volts, data, and ground. You can connect the led's to the 3.3 volts and ground, and use whatever resistor is needed for the type of LED. I'll have to get back to you on the joystick replacement.

So yeah, run the leds from the 3.3 volts to the ground.

I have a noob question about the resistor
will it work if I use a resistor that is too high?

If it's REALLY too high, the LED won't get enough electricity, and won't power up. If it's just a little too high, the LED will just be dimmer.

Just so I don't mess this up I should solder the the points where the wire connects to the board right?

I tried this with a "test" led without a resistor, I will see if it burns up or not because I bought the wrong resistors (1k and up :( )

I'll post pics tomorrow

Don't bump old threads if you have nothing meaningful to add.

Dusting off a thread is only acceptable under a few conditions; the main one being that if you have something new and intelligent to add to a previously discussed topic, it's probably fine to bump the topic for discussion. Please do not bring up a year-old topic if you have nothing useful to add.

that means like a page 3 thread, not 10 topics down. Even though it was a worthless post, it may remind the user that he should work on his project.

ya I stopped working on this for now because I only have yellow leds and I dont like the way they look in the purple case
but it does work if you solder it directly to the 3v and ground

another question: can I drill holes in the board and still have the controller function properly?

as long as it isn't through a trace or components, but that leaves a lot of spots

I've got probably 30 or so - I bought one of those plastic storage containers from Wal-Mart that holds them just about perfectly.

Otherwise, you could make something to hold them - it's not like they're weirdly-shaped or differ in size. If I had more, I'd probably do that. Ideally, you could make a shelf that held them like greeting cards:

(game)(game)(game)
(game)(game)(game)
(game)(game)(game)
(game)(game)(game)
(____ )(____ )(____ )
