Can't say I know for sure this will help you or not, but my sister had some disc read issues with her Wii for the longest time. And she freakin waited untill the warranty was up to do anything about it. I was tempted to open it up and clean it, see if that was the issue. I cleaned disks, I tried some of my Wii games, I mean we both have a copy of Super Mario Galaxy so I tried mine. Still an error..... Anyway I got it working eventually, strangely I found that adjusting it from the vertical and horizontal position has some effect on how it reads the disc. At first I could only get it to work properly in the horizontal position, but later I was able to move it back to vertical position, but it was only after I changed games that I realized this.

Please don't quote me on this, because I can't say it will be the solution to your problem, but experiment with some of your game discs and see if they will read if you adjust the position of the Wii. Just never move it while it's attempting to read, can't say the Wii is like the 360, but disk drives like that are not designed for movement while spinning the disk and may cause it to scratch the disk with the laser housing.

I really want a flatmii, but I can't really justify paying 48 bucks for a little pcb with magic smoke inside of it. Games appear to be working fine now, but now that I've taken it apart, is there anything I should add or change before I put it back together?

Ha I did quote you on it. Anyways, my dog knocked over the X360 one time and the halo 3 disc inside was damaged beyond the point of repair. It make this crinkling noise when you bent it a tiny bit and it was flexible. The xbox is now permanently horizontal.
