FC twin overclock

Post by f0ster »

Hi,
I am new to video game modding, but I have been learning about electronics and microcontrollers.
I have an FC twin right now, and I notice that when I play a game like Mega Man 3 for NES, it lags because the AI is pretty intense in the game. Does anyone know if this is a clock speed problem or a ram problem? I figured with the SNES hardware in the twin, it shouldnt lag. Anyways, my question is, how hard would it be to overlock the FC twin to get around this lag (if that lag is even the problem) ?

Well, you can't do anything about the amount of RAM it has, but you can replace the crystal oscillator in it with a faster one. But overclocking a NES (or equivalent clone) isn't like overclocking a PC. Overclock a PC and it processes faster. Overclock a NES and everything is faster.

Also, please post console topics in the appropriate console forum, not the general forum. Thanks.

Is that difficult to replace a crystal oscillator? Do you think it would solve my "lag" issue?

Maybe.

Here is a NES OC guide

I would not expect a similar method to work for a clone but it could.

Everything would be faster. If it's lagging, it would probably still lag, but the lagging would be about normal speed while everything else that doesn't lag would be faster.

Yeah, I was thinking OC'ing wouldnt solve the problem, but would only make the lag proportional to my OC speed. Not sure if that'll make the game easier or harder...

I've never overclocked an FC Twin, but I have overclocked a NES. I installed a switch to switch between the 2 clocks. It's nice for the Mega Man series of games.

Well, you can overclock the PPU and overcome most lag, but that raises the audio pitch.
