Some games had "secret codes" that you can enter using a controller.

The game genie is used to alter game variables so that you can cheat even if the game didn't have any "built in" codes.

its a cheating devise like the game shark or action replay of today

also a lot of people get the connector off of one when coverting a famiclone for NES carts but the cost is about the same as what gannon charges for the converter so you might as well just get it off one of those if you dont already have one or dont want to destroy it

Game Genies are also nice because you can use their 72-Pin Female connectors to ground your carts directly to the main board. ^_^

No special hardware needed, either.. just a phillips jewler and a soldering iron.
