Re: Cell phones?
Do some people not see the convience of you know... finding people instead of walking around college all lunch looking for them? Seriously. If you don't want a phone fair dos, but to go and blast people for using them for everyday tasks such as meeting friends and then claim they should lose weight by walking looking for their friends is a really stupid argument.
EDIT: I thought i'd add the cost of Cellphones in here, dunno about you, but I paid £40 for my phone with fashionable form factor, slide design, bluetooth, camera and MP3 player, pretty nifty I must say.. but still only £40. top up £10 whenever I need it for whatever girl i'm with at the time (haha...), friends etc. runs me about £20 a month. Personally, i've spent £100 on one item of clothing before, and £20 a month I usually spend on alcohol anyway. So how is a cellphone both costly and useless compared to IM and Myspace/Facebook which is free.. you know, on a computer, a little bigger than a mobile phone :S
How would you like it if say a friend died and nobody could contact you because you didnt 'need' a mobile phone? =/

Re: Cell phones?
You only spend 40 bucks a month on alcohol? Is liquor dirt cheap over in the UK? I could blow 80 bucks easy on drinks in just one night!
And as far as cell phones go, I couldn't live without mine. Yes, I'm one of those.

Negative_Creep: You're paying for your own phone, and since you're (presumably) in college, that's different. I'm not saying owning one is bad at all; I just think it's stupid that kids my age with no real, legitimate need for a phone have to have one.
khaag: You're old enough to be traveling halfway around the globe by yourself. I think you owning a phone is acceptable, too.

I can get a bottle of whiskey at 40% proof for like £5-10, one litre on that is enough to put you into a comakhaag wrote:You only spend 40 bucks a month on alcohol? Is liquor dirt cheap over in the UK? I could blow 80 bucks easy on drinks in just one night!![]()

@Twilight Wolf: I wasn't directly speaking to you since you just stated you didn't want one, your choice, but other people were literally flaming others for wanting and using mobile phones.

Re: Cell phones?
I got one after I had a job and a car. I see it as a tool to communicate with, not a fashionable toy like lots of kids I know. I've only sent one text as a response to a text I got and it took me 15 minutes to find out how to back space
. Kids shouldn't have cell phones, that's just retarded.

Re: Cell phones?
I have one, but I'm not like the other kids in north america, I actually pay for mine, I only got one cause I stay after school a lot and tend to walk around the main street in my town at random, so I could just call my mom and tell her I'm okay. I think kids 15 and up should have phones but not kids in elementary school.
I haven't been here in awhile, and looking back it's one of the worst ideas I ever had. I'm back and I'll be here for awhile, I was quite active 1 year ago and I hope to become that again.
Re: Cell phones?
My main beef with cell phones is that many kids think that they're entitled to them just because they're alive. So if they don't have one, they hate their parents for it. Cell phones just started getting popular with the average consumer in the last 10 years or so, yet some people would die if they couldn't have one. And then theres the idiots that drive while texting (driving being the secondary action, because it usually is)...
I don't care if someone pays for their own phone (or could, but someone else pays anyway), but I can think of many better things I'd rather spend my money on.

Re: Cell phones?
FAIL!40% proof
40% alcohol and 40 proof are very different. 1 proof = 0.5%
You mean 80 proof.
Also, are we talking a 40 of whiskey? (1.15L / 40 oz.)
Around here, it's all government controlled. (Liquor Control Board of Ontario - LCBO.ca, and the Beer Store). a 60 (1.75L) of any spirit runs $50. A 40, I believe, is around $35, and a 26er (750mL) costs $23.
So...cell phones!
...
Hey, sup?

Re: Cell phones?
Ah yes, the evolution of SpongeBuell's cell phones. The perfect way to procrastinate sleep, and all of you obviously want to know my input
When I was a freshman in high school, I got a cheap (then $70) phone from Virgin Mobile, the Party Animal. I actually kept that until about my Senior year of high school, when everyone had color screens, cameras, and polyphonic ringtones. My phone had none of the 3. Then, seeing a $20 (or was it $10-15?) phone with a color screen at Radio Shack, and a better size at that, I got it. Yep, apparently people actually buy phones at Radio Shack, whoa. Then, after a few months in college, I realized that I was using my phone way too much to keep with Virgin Mobile, so I switched to T-Mobile prepaid. Then I started using enough minutes that I needed a topoff again after 3 months (spent $100, was supposed to last at least twice what it did, but I talked too much). Saw that I could get an old Smartphone for $50 if I signed a contract (free if I got a $40 plan, but $30 was fine at the time). Then, I got a girlfriend. And I started getting about $10 in overages every month talking with her all the time. Got signed on with MyFaves, and now have unlimited calling between me and her, along with 4 others (home, relatives, and friends).
Then, almost a year ago, I found a deal for a T-Mobile Wing for $200 used, along with some other random things. Well worth it, amazing phone, especially with its bluetooth and the bluetooth integration with my car's stereo.

Re: Cell phones?
My first cell phone was one I got from my brother when I was in high school. The old stupid buy a prepaid card for a month and you have call time. I lost it when my other brother picked it up out of our room and as he said "gave it to someone that could really use it." Keeping in mind that at the time $10 a month in the case I need to call for a ride or something like that wasn't a valid use.
Like a few others I got a cell phone after high school. One provided by my parents, who only wanted me to have one in case of emergencies. That was about 6 or 7 years ago, I now use it as my main line. It's for me only, I generally know who it is that is calling me and yeah I use it to keep track of time and use as a wake up alarm. A very nifty and useful tool.
I've upgraded mine over the years, and recently upgraded to the BlackJack II. I know I really wont use it for music as I a few MP3 players. But I need a phone as I had 11 voice mails for the week I was without a phone. Sorry but when it's your main, it's kind of important to have one. Plus I heard the BJ2 has GPS that I can enable using Garmin/TomTom software, so why the hell not.
As for kids who have phones and don't need it. In a way they kinda do. It's a way for their parents to keep tabs on them, at the very least make sure their safe. This can really only be done with a cell phone. And with a lot of phones now having that GPS tracking, parents can be sure their kids are not getting into trouble. So what's the harm in letting them have something like that.
The only down side I can see if when the stupid brat goes over the monthly limit of minutes. A friend's girlfriend (ex now) some how ran the wireless bill up to $900 in a month. If you can avoid that problem, I don't see a problem.

Re: Cell phones?
UMm ya i know what you mean i got a cheap one for Christmas it was like 10 bucks. The only reason my parents got me it was because i do a lot of bike riding when ever theres not snow. They got me it because i got in to a really nasty bike accident where i broke 3 bones and i had to walk like 3/4s of a mile to my house because i could not call them to get me. So i only really us it for emergences. Also i do some web design and some clients fell like i dont know its a means of always contacting your over payed designer. but i have used maybe 6 minutes since Christmas.

exactly without a cell phone text or calling its very difficult to find people think a cell phone as a indian trackermadc0w wrote:You ever think you don't call people cause you don't have a cell?
I have one, for communications sake. It would be very difficult to locate my friends or tell my parents where I am.
