I don't know having a Cell Phone while downtown is pretty important if you need a ride back home 8)

I never text. If someone texts me I just call them right back. I do not have a fancy phone. Base model Samsung phone.

You don't need a phone if youre under 18? Wow, get off your high college horse. I'm constantly at different places, home, school, plays, home depot, getting food, buying groceries, and I'm still in high school. Its a neccessity. Its difficult nowadays to contact peopel's homes, and email is old news. Basically you have aim, facebook and cells. I use it all the time to coordinate things. I couldn't find my people at my school.

I don't think I'd survive too well in Uni if I didn't have one. On such a big campus it's nigh on impossible to find anyone unless you text them. Also one of my mates has a killer sense of humor when she texts so sometimes it's fun to flick through some of the old texts if i need a laugh.

Never cared about the actual phone, use one til it's dead then buy another cheap one. Current one has no back so the battery always fall out and is scratched and dented beyond recognition

Erm... no it isn't. You call their house and ask "Is ____ home?" As for email, no it isn't.
Maybe not in elementary school, but you d*mn near need one in high school. I know schools have phones, but usually there's a line a mile long. I've got a pay-as-you-go thing which is dirt cheap.
Erm...no you don't. I know many, including myself, that fared just fine without one. Like was previously said, you're all contained in one building, where there's two or three spots to hang. Doesn't take a whole lot of walking to find a friend. Remember moving? People used to do it. Doesn't take a whole lot of effort unless you're really fat, which can be cured by more walking.

As for the phone lines being a mile long. As if. Boo hoo. Learn some patience. It not like people use payphones to chat it up with their boyfriends or anything.

Also, why do you need to phone ANYONE during school? In school you're kind of IN SCHOOL. And when you're done, there's a free private bus service just for you and your classmates. And there's the public bus service too, also free to students (Maybe not everywhere, though). Or in a worst-case scenario you can just walk home, it shouldn't take over an hour or two. And it'll cure your fatness.

That being said, once my minutes expire I'm going for the new $100 for a year pay-as-you-go, and highly recommend it. If you're getting a phone, that's the way to go (Y) ($10/month extra for 500 texts, if I'm correct, $7 for unlimited internet, etc etc) With virgin mobile (they've recently upped their rates) you can get a much better deal, contract free.

And as for using a phone solely as a clock. (And paying a monthly fee to do so)

YOU ARE FULL OF FAIL AND AIDS. BUY A GODDAMN POCKET WATCH OR SOMETHING.

THAT being said, I love you all. Well, most.

I'd buy myself a cell phone if I needed it, but, since I don't have one, I guess I dont need it. :?

Nobody needs a cell phone. For anything. And in any situation you propose that you would need one, there is always a better method.

This thread should be locked, because it's most likely going to turn into a flame war.

And Kurt, I could shoot back and respond, but that would be getting one step closer to a flame war. Instead, I'm going to step out of the room and hope there isn't a guy with a baseball bat outside the door.

I hope it doesn't; I didn't intend for it to go that way. I was just wondering who had a cell phone and why.

Kurt:
I'm sorry, I didn't realize that all schools are the same. There are a lot of places to hang out and open campus at my school. I could walk around for the entire lunch and not be able to find people. Also not every school has busing. We have very minimal busing, basically handicapped people and young kids who live very far from their elementary school.
Also I can tell you my school doesn't have a pay phone. The only payphones in my town off hand that I can remember are at a diner and the pool.
People are not at home like they used to be. a lot of people are buys nowadays, and have busy schedules.
Also, I feel like this is just another example of people knocking technology cause you don't "need it" I could say the same thing for AIM, or facebook, or any other social networking/messaging services. Why don't we just use letters for things?
Also email is antiquated. I know of very few teens who use email for anything other than getting physics notes and college emails.

Even if they're all unneccesary, they don't charge you every month regardless of whether you use them or not.

To me, texting has all the bad things that email has. You can't tell who is online unless you say something like "Are you there?". You can't tell if someone is typing a reply. Texting is the cell phone's expen$ive version of email. You also get a tiny keyboard and tiny screen, all to make your experience more uncomfortable. Using IM on your phone would make it a bit better.
If you got all your friends to stop texting and use email from their phone instead, there would be no difference.

Ok, I've kinda realized this is a dumb argument. Its really just a matter of culture. I live outside the city, in a suburb with PTA moms and wallstreet dads. To us, our quick and busy life style needs cell phones to functions. We live between different places, work, home and school. And we need to be connected no matter what. You guys live in a different culture than me, and I have to realize that there are differences between us.
Also cell phones rock. That is all.

That's why I mentioned previously that some kids might have a legitimate need for a phone. I don't, since I'm at home most of the time and people can contact me here.
