jdmlight says: that his account is being dumb due to an email no being reset correctly and is having me post stuff for him, and alsoMy cell phone is basically like a tether attached to my mom...seriously...I wish I didn't have it...(that's also the reason she pays for the minutes).
The only thing that's useful is texting friends to arrange a group meeting or something. (hence I pay for the texting part of the bill)
If it were up to me, I'd just have a phone with a data plan so that I can email/IM people...oh and Skype too. [skyperant]Skype ftw. Unlimited calls to US & Canada with voicemail for $4.95/mo.[/skyperant]
But what REALLY drives me nuts is that when you have a cell phone people assume they can get a hold of you at ANY time...and then they panic if you don't answer. Seriously, I may just have gone to the bathroom - or I don't feel like talking to you now. Either way I hate the obligation attached to the stupid cell phone...
Oh and I only got a cell phone when I went away to college. I never had one in high school when "everyone had one." There is no point to having a cell phone when you're 1/2 mile away from home...if the school blew up or something I'd walk home (like I did every day btw, but that's a rant for another discussion...).

That's something I would definitely find irritating. I dislike it when people IM me saying "Are you there, man? Hello?" when I don't respond within thirty seconds, so knowing they could do the same, but wherever I went, would be aggravating.lifeisbetterwithketchup wrote:But what REALLY drives me nuts is that when you have a cell phone people assume they can get a hold of you at ANY time...and then they panic if you don't answer. I was forced into it
Despite my negative thoughts of carrying around cell phone, my mother forced me into taking her hand me down cell phone well lets see here, about 4-5 years ago. Was an old LG flip model with color screen and stuffs, pretty decent i suppose. BUT i was the only one of my friends that had a cell phone..........
Year later i upgraded to a Sanyo, oh btw my provider is Sprint, not a flip phone, still a color screen, and an amazing battery life. I held onto that one for about 3 years..........Then finally out of sheer will i decided to upgrade to a phone with a quarty keyboard....if i spelt that right.
Right now i carry a Sprint LG Rumor, black and blue finish, 1.3megapixel camera, full slide out quarty keyboard, and probably half the battery life of my Sanyo, but i feel thats only because i'm a little more active with it.
I now text 3 times as much as i did about a year ago, and probably make more calls as well i suppose. Looking back i realized that it is not desire that pulls you into owning a phone, but necessity to communicate whenever and where ever possible.

Do what my older brother does - never answer your phone and just respond to voicemail messages. I don't think he does it on purpose, but no one is surprised when he doesn't answer.Twilight Wolf wrote:That's something I would definitely find irritating. I can't stand all these lazy as*****s who can't pay for their shiny new blackberry and hollister clothes, and make their parents do it for them. When I need stuff, I get it with my own money, and I have a job. I can't think of one other freshman at my school that has a job, yet they all have all these new phones with music and texting. And what affect does all this have on the parents who pay for it? Low budget crappy housing. My bus makes a stop in this low budget apatment complex, and all the students that get off there have designer clothes and ipod touches and expensive phones. And these are the same kids complaining that their mommy and daddy don't make enought money to support the family's needs. Yet they support the children's $400 bills. I honestly think cell phones are becoming a downfall of the economy. I do not own a cell phone, and I do not wear hollister, or any other designer stuff. And you know what is the result of this? I have money which I can put in the bank to save up to buy a nice used car when I need one, and eventually a house. I don't even put that much money to my projects. only $10 of my weekly paycheck goes to projects.

I got my first phone when I was 13ish
Old Sanyo phone, no camera, mono screen etc. My nan brought them for me and my brother.
Now, I've got a G1 Google phone, on a £35 month contract £250 credit per month (But I only use a max of about £40 of that :/), free 3g internet
Mainly use it to stay in touch with friends/family as I rent a 4 bed house with my mates and we don't have a house phone.

I had one and planed to mod it. I was going to add more memory some how VIa the cheap SD card slot and then make a case mod for it. some thing 8 bit. Then I was out drinking and lost it in my glass taking a picture of some art work. God dam Gin an tonic weekends. Though I did make it home with a waitress that night. To bad I didn't have any furniture in my apartment yet.
yeah doing it on the floor, and messing up some art work in the process.

I must say, your post intriqued me mostly because it was pretty true. Little 13 year old kids running around with their shiny phones and stuff is ruining economy for parents but guess what... these kids are unpopular in school, work everywhere. Nobody likes a little spoilt brat so don't worry about it. I never wore designer clothing when I was 13/14 (I dunno how old you are), but people still spoke to me.themadhacker wrote:I do not own a cell phone, and I do not wear hollister, or any other designer stuff. Although now (i'm 17) I do have a flashy cell phone, a gaming rig, a PS3, a HDTV and wear a lot of designer clothing (Diesel, Henleys, Fenchurch, G-Star), but I paid for it. Not that I can afford a car now haha, but the money keeps coming in.

Ok, let me respond to people.
First pay phones suck now. Its impossible to find one around our area that works, half of them eat quarters and don't work.
The watch argument is moot. You can have a watch, I can have a cell phone. I use it as a watch, a communication device, camera, etc.
Texting is more useful than AIM cause.... everyones on texting. Not everyone's on AIM.
And its not a fashionable thing at all. There is a little fashionability in having a nice phone, like a blackberry or an iphone, but having a phone is just a neccessity. Being able to contact people at anytime is a must in everyday society nowadays.
Also texting across class is hilarious. Its the only way to make fun of our math teacher without her knowing.

I agree with the whole "you don't need a cell phone until out of high school" philosophy. Until you find yourself wandering in places where you know nobody without any money, you can't possibly justify a $40/month plan. The cheapest they go over here is $30, unless you use one like I do, mainly for finding friends around campus, on an $9/month pay-as-you-go "plan" (as in I planned out what I'd be using it for, and working out the cost)
I mean, just pay some dude $20 to use his cell phone for a call if you get lost. There's no way you can justify a cell phone if you're under 17.
Also. A cellphone is a cellphone. It makes calls, and nowadays texting is standard. However, a cellphone does NOT have to play games, browse the internet, stream music, play videos, or comb your hair at night. It does NOT need to cost $400.
The value of money is definitely lost in today's society.

Hey, sup?
I got one a couple years ago. But then it broke. So now I have a temporary piece of junk (my dad's old one). We've tried to order a new phone from rogers like 3 times now.
A cell phone is real useful for contacting parents, friends, etc. If you were in business it would be useful for that too, especially if you traveled a lot. That said, I rarely play games and never text, mostly because I don't have anyone to text to (I'm quite a loner). And I diagree with Kurt. Maybe not in elementary school, but you d*mn near need one in high school. I know schools have phones, but usually there's a line a mile long. I've got a pay-as-you-go thing which is dirt cheap. You can buy these 100 dollar cards that last for a year. That works out to less than $10 a month, which is the minimum payment.
