NES D-pad in a 360 controller

Post by RDC »

Yep, I did it again. This time with the D-pad from a poor old NES controller that has seen much better days, dunno what chewed the cord up on the thing, but it must have been right tasty.

That screw up there on the side of the D-pad is from shaving out part of the inside of the D-pad area for the wiring to have room. It wouldn't be there if I'd have been paying just a tad bit more attention. It really makes me want to scrap the whole shell and do another one, which I'm sure sooner or later I most likely will do because I am apparently that OC about some things, honestly I plan to never use the thing anyway, just did it to do it and see how it could be done. ;)

Screwing up is one of the best learning tools, so long as the only thing you're not learning is how to screw up.

Nice work! The stock 360 Dpad kind of sucks, and this is an awesome replacement. I agree with dragonball345 though, you should paint that part white to match.

Form follows function in my book, I prefer to make the thing work good first, then pretty it up later on. ;) Like I did with the PS3 D-pad controller, first one was about horrible to look at, but it was more of a 'proof of concept' like this one, second one had more looks to it, but also worked good since that part was figured out already. Plus since I had the Dremel mishap on this one I've written it off to go down that 'pretty it up' road anyway. I'll probably end up making another one later on and paint it to match the shell, most likely a black one since I've already seen what this looks like.

Not a whole lot to see inside really, it's about the same as the PS3 D-pad mod internally just with NES parts, the section of D-pad board from the NES pad, some hot glue and foam padding for bracing, but here ya go..

What screw-up? It looks fine to me. (And if you use some putty to fill the gap between the parts, then finish it right, you won't notice anything. :P)

Looks good!

Thanks. At the base of the D-pad, where it meets the body of the controller is where it's messed up, nothing major, just about went all the way thru from the inside out with the Dremel.

This one was just a proof of concept anyway, I'm not at all motivated to clean it up or invest the finishing up time into it, since that's where the time really gets sunk into a project.

Even with you pointing it out it was hard to see. Looks awesome.

Slick, a great upgrade from the D-pad they've got on there currently; you'll probably really appreciate that mod when Street Fighter IV comes around! :D

I'm with the others, though, you should throw a bit of bondo on there to fill the gaps and paint 'er up. Wouldn't be that much work, and the final result would be stunning.

Nice job, I like it. Painting the d-pad frame white would have made it look just about factory. But in any case, it looks great as is. Nice trimming job on the plastic.

Nicely done. You should really paint it, though.

I don't plan on taking this apart. I currently do not have the modding expertise to put it back together if I somehow screw it up lol.
