NOOB intro
Hey guys,
Name is Joe, 37years old, 2 kids.
I guess you could say I'm not new to this, in the late 1970's my dad, who was a cabinit maker, intergrated our atari into out zenith tv, it was a custom cabinet that he built, i'm still looking for a picture. Other that that, Ive never really modded any thing, but am VERY interested in doing somthing like this.
My backgroud-by trade, i am an auto technition, hobbies include, video games, boating, model trains.

Welcome!
An auto-tech is a good job to have as a background, quite a lot of the skills you learn apply to modding. If you want to make a portable, I would try to find a copy of "Hacking videogame consoles" at your local bookstore. You will move past it eventually, but it is a great primer for modding (If a bit outdated).

Model trains will help you quite a bit with case making. If for nothing else, then for the precision gluing/painting and the knowledge of various adhesives.
I recommend you buy a NOAC (NES-on-a-chip) or Atari-on-a-chip [or other plug and play device], take it apart, and try to do something with it. It doesn't matter what, really. Just explore electronics a bit, learn their limits (ie how delicately to handle them), see what's inside, and maybe research and try to name the parts you find.
What exactly are you planning to build? A cabinet? A portable? Cabinets can are much easier to build, electronically speaking.
