De-Portabling?

Post by davidthefat »

Any one thought about making any handheld consoles not portable? maybe a ds+psp in one? Not asking anyone to make it but Im just putting the idea out there... Seen though the projects and they seem kinda boring

the PSP can be easily modified to be a console, as it has rgb out. The newer one has composite too, i think. The DS is a bit more tricky, but it has been done.

The DS wouldn't make a good console because of the whole touch screen deal. If you made it completely like a console where both screens would be on the TV, then you wouldn't be able to see what you're touching on the touch screen. If you made just the top screen viewable on the TV, then it'd be useless on those games that make use of just the touch screen.

The PSP would make a fairly good console, it has high emulation support, very good homebrew, and sadly, just a few good games. Turning a PSP into a console would be closest linked to a PS1 that has homebrew support and uses memory cards rather than disks. Would have a fair amount of media support, more than any console with near equal graphics. Not to mention that if you do put custom firmware on your PSP then it'd have things like Youtube support and better web browsing. A crippled web browser, but a web browser nonetheless. Really wouldn't take too long to do either, and it'd make a very good project.

you wouldn't need to deportabilize it, though. You could just add AV out (if not already present) and a controller port

I am surprised nobody has mentioned the GBA. It can be modded to have composite out. Also, the game gear can be modded to output rgb.

Great Idea! I looked at the handheld hacking thread and I thaught "What do they do? de-portablize stuff?" And the very first thread was de-portablize anyways I think you should give it a shot. It would be pretty awesome.
