I suppose it's a little late, but you totally should do integrated screen controls for maximum badass.

Just because it was done on the sleek N64 portable by Sifuf doesn't mean it is definitive and all should have it. He has made an excellent system; although it doesn't have a memory card (some games need it) or rumble pack / LED instead and used a joystick instead of regular buttons for the C buttons (which will make it difficult to combine buttons like in Banjo Kazooie when you press two buttons at the same time to complete certain functions); or batteries (to make it a portable). However, the extent he trimmed down the PSone screen mobo and also the N64 mobo was impressive. Pity he hasn't made threads to explain how he did it, for others to read. Far better to share knowledge with others than to keep it to yourself, I believe.
Using existing buttons as dual purpose for screen contrast and volume is nice; doesn't need the circuits proposed in the thread but could be done by two switches (2 way, 2 pole) to change between PSone screen controls and d-pad functions, to keep it easy; however I prefer keeping the buttons separate. Personal choices, after all.
Mario - Nah, will stay with separate PSone screen controls, I prefer that way.
Not showing pics of the front of the case until the system is complete, as I want to give a big "wow" factor. What I can say is I showed my wife the case with the two joysticks in place and the d-pad cross placed in position today and she said "wow, that looks really professional" - her jaw dropped...
That is the reaction I am hoping for from others when this baby is finished and it posted in final form; keeping the front of the screen and backing section secret is the only way to get the "wow" factor...
It does look gorgeous, I will say that!

Of course, it's your choice.
And no need to get defensive.
He made some choices I wouldn't make either, but I think that the integrated screen controls are awesome.
Oh, and on the latest page there are some diagrams for integrated controls.

Re-reading my post it does look a bit defensive - sorry about that.
I was going to use two rumble motors from a controller for the project, but as I used three battery packs (6 cells) there isn't room for two, although I could fit in one; so what I did was buy four "Nakimi Pager and Cell Phone Micro Motor - Low S/H", they are unbalanced rumble/vibration motors, operate 1-5v, are (not including shaft with weight): .49" long x .16" diameter, weigh .05 oz, made for vibration alerts in cell phones and pagers, removable rubber shock sleeve, winding resistance 11 ohms.

Thought I would mount these four units on the case front, one above and one below the d-pad and also 4 button pad, for maximum effect, and if I need a fifth unit for extra vibration, I can use a standard rumble motor in the base unit, although I prefer not to as this will be near the CD mechanism, so I don't want it to be affected by the rumble motor in case it makes the CD jump. This is why I got the mobile phone/pager rumble motors.

I've worked with those, and they're not very powerful.bacteria wrote:Re-reading my post it does look a bit defensive - sorry about that.

You're going to need all 4, definitely.
I ran mine off of 9v for making Vibrobots.
You can basically run them off of anything, I wonder if 9v damages them though.

What are you talking about? Of course it does!bacteria wrote:Just because it was done on the sleek N64 portable by Sifuf doesn't mean it is definitive and all should have it.
I still can't believe that thing has been attracting thousands of guests a day! Yesterday it had ~105k views, today it has 170k! Crazy!
Anyway, good find with the rumble motors. Hammerstein is right, though, they look rather weak. Probably gonna want to run them at the full 5v.
Just a side thought, even though we use different measurement systems (Metric and English [But I prefer Metric]), at least we still use the same measurements for voltage and mA! ^_^
Well, your measurement systems don't make any bloody sense
also, you may want to edit that "english" to "american", because british people use a sane measurement system as well. And they speak english as well. As a matter of fact, they did it before you guys were even on that continent with your cell phones and your portable dvd players and your name brand soda

You're all wrong, it's called the "Imperial System." Metric is better, of course. Imperial is better for cooking though. It's based on quarters and thirds, which is useful for cookies. :3
