TI-82 Gameboy Color

Post by DSFARGEG »

I know it's been done before, but not to the extent that I plan on taking it.

Right now I have all the wiring done. The arrow buttons on the calculator control the D-Pad, 2nd is A, X,T,Θ is B, ENTER is Start, and ON is Select.

There's no screen on it right now because I cut through half of the ribbon cable while trimming some plastic off the calculator case.

The back is the farthest from being done.
Eventually I'm going to attach the two main plastic parts together and somehow build in the existing battery compartment to make a single back piece.
I'm not sure if I'm going to leave the speaker on or where I would put it.
I'd like to put a headphone jack where the original cable port was on the calculator, but I'm not sure if there's room.

Sorry for the bad photos, I only have access to my laptop's webcam right now.

Let me be the first to say: Bravo!

I would, however, recommend you put in all the other buttons for the additional novelty of it.

You could also spraypaint the buttons used for a/b red or something that will stand out.

Also, wetsand and spraypaint the 2 halves to the shell a flat grey or black, so it still looks like a calculator, for with these kind of mods, the fun is seeing the look on peoples faces when they realize that it actually isn't really a calculator/ toaster/ TV/ Cat, or whatever you decide to put it in...

EDIT: maybie you could put the speaker under some buttons on the bottom, given you replace them. The sound would come out through the gaps between the parts, ya digg?

Yeah, I plan on putting them all back, I just left only those in to show which ones were functional.

Hmm, that's not a bad idea.

I'm still deciding on what color to paint it. Part of me wants to make it inconspicuous, but another part of me wants to make it flashy, say a mirror finish black or red.

Not sure if I'd be able to do this. The way I have the calculator button PCB soldered to the GBC PCB I think that if I cut through any traces I could mess something up, but I'll see if it's possible.

I'd say leave it looking like a calculator. That's the whole charm of it.

As far as speakers go, why not use some PSP ones mounted on the sides? THey are small, and relatively thin. I admit I do not know how much space you have inside however, and where it is.

If you're looking at this post and it was made before 2008, just ignore it.

Good idea, I'll try that.

In other news, I might have fried my gameboy. I was soldering wires from where the headphone jack connects to the board to the headphone jack itself, but now it won't turn on. :?

Kyo, I'm also clueless to the meaning on this one. Although I'd assume its just Triton's awesomeness.

Regarding how I said the gameboy wouldn't turn on, turns out I blew one of the fuses on the PCB, but I fixed that. I also decided not to keep the speaker, but relocated the GBC headphone jack from the PCB to where the cable connector was for the calculator.

Here are pictures of the headphone jack:

3.7v isn't too much for a Gameboy? Well, 2 AA's would be 3v, so I guess that's fairly close. Would probably run a fair while longer.

the gbc also steps it up to 5V for gameboy games. I don't know if it uses those 5V for GBC games as well, but I'm assuming they work under 5V because most can be played in the GBO as well
