PC case mods

Post by benheck »

I've been writing some articles for Make online about PC case mods.

I still have 6 articles left to go (it runs until January 2nd) and I'm running out of cool ones to find online.

So if anyone here has done a cool PC/Mac case mod and has pics etc, let me know! I could use it for a write-up.

Discuss here or send me email, thanks!

Best PC case mods I've made are a hole for a fan and an engraving... and due to the case the engraving is -really- hard to photograph.

So although I have done a case mod or two it's very insignificant, beginner stuff.

I'm building an HTPC case out of wood and an old Gateway, and hopefully add a large volume knob and a VU meter. The plan is to make it look like an old stereo, to match all our old equipment. (It's all from the late 70s to early 80s, except for the speakers.) It hasn't gotten off the drawing board yet, though. (Still have to work out how to get the depth down, as it's going in a cabinet 24" deep.)

Have you done an article about the ever-present MacQuarium yet? (Basically take any all-in-one Mac form the 128k to the original iMac and stick an aquarium in there.) That's an old one.

Have you been looking here?

Scale down your large images or link them. Nobody likes horizontal scrolling! :P -bic

Thanks I'll take those under consideration.

I don't know why I've never done a PC mod (besides the MGDpc but does that count?) For my own personal stuff it's mostly stock, the only thing I've modded is the flipper on my Rock Band guitars.

I've never even had my own Xbox 360 apart!

My PC is, let's see, a quad-core 2.4 gig, 4 gigs RAM, 1.5 TB HD (took the possum work drive out, used to be 2 TB) oh and it runs VISTA!!! I should get a new video card one of these days, it's an 8600 GTS and the weakest part of the system.

If I did a PC mod it'd probably be like some sort of media center PC, to bridge the gap between what the Xbox and PS3 cannot do.

RE case mods, even if they aren't yours, just something cool you've seen online (and has 4-5 pics minimum, plus a write-up) let me know! Thanks...

At http://www.mini-itx.com they have an entire list of casemods people have done with their mini-itx boards and such. there are probably over 50 mods. Most have multiple pictures as well as work logs. I believe there is a mini-itx laptop in there.

This has got to be one of the most amazing case mods I've ever seen. It's based on the digital building in Beijing that was built for the Olympics.

Here are some pictures:
