A question for modding PSPs...

Post by hibbijo »

Would it ever be possible to make a "fake" update, that is custom
firmware or V1.5 "In disguise" kinda. Like make UMDs that just have fake firmware updates that install CFW. Just an idea, what would be the
process and difficulty of doing something like this? And is it even possible?

Making UMDs without special equipment is impossible. :/

UMD burner DO exist, though. Get your hands on one, and your idea... Might be possible? I think that the disc would have to be signed, but it is such a strange format that they do not bother... Hm. I doubt it would work, but do not know exactly why.

I suppose it would be possible if you had a UMD burner...

But then it would only run on a region free PSP or unless you have a region sign for it to work on your PSP until it is signed.

( yes palmertech, im agreeing with you for once )

But to make the OFW PSP think it is s CFW, you would need to compile the custom firmware update and the ofw update into 1 file...

Now thinking of it, you can find DVD discs that are as small as the UMD discs, and you can find replacement covers for your ones on ebay, so theres the cover.

Actually, i think it might be possible,

Put in a game rom on it that still has the firmware on it, and change the firmware using UMD Dumper ( or some other program ) and recompile the rom, then burn to a disc, and theoretically speaking, it should work.

Ok, just to see if any of what i had said makes any sense to me, im going to try it.

But if someone else is going to try this also, if you only have a CD burner not a DVD burner on your PC, then you might as well not even bother...

Since i have a blue ray burner and a DVD burner, im fine =D

EDIT: You can buy the cases from this user: http://myworld.ebay.com/umdguys/ its $20 US for 10 of them... there is probably somewhere else where you can buy off the net, but i like ebay...

All PSPs (unless it has recently been changed) are region free for games. The movies are the only things that are region locked.

That wouldn't matter. When a game is on a UMD disk, there is more than one file on the disk.

I think the DVD disks are actually a bit larger than the UMD disks.

I don't think it will work. Even if you do manage to burn a UMD disk, you probably still need to sign the file with Sony's special key.

UMD's and DVD's aren't interchangeable. Just because it'll fit doesn't automatically mean it'll work.

Look at that common sense, it's logical and 100% correct.

I know that when they are on a disc are more than 1 file.

I mean just for the update, But we shall see, im going to try it by otting it like we update the CFW, and if it doesnt work, im going to try and compile in 1 file...

The discs im talking about are slightly smaller by 0.4mm ( so they are 59.6mm in diameter ), but they hold 1.4gb not 1.8gb which sucks. So when i do this, im going to use my Need for Speed 5-1-0, so there goes 900mb ( approx ) from the disc.

Well, we shall see what happens, if i have to sign it, ill find out how somehow...

Well, this still worth a try....

---

Now thinking of it, I think if it works on my slim, and my phat, it might work on a 3000, because it isnt pandora... This *currently* has nothing to do with pandora, so this might have a chance...

UMD drives use a different type of laser and logic board to read and decode the data on a UMD disk. Sure, there are combo drives for things like CD's and DVD's that have lasers able to read both kinds of disks, but the PSP's UMD drive would not be that kind of drive, as there's no point to a PSP being able to read a format of disk that wouldn't fit in the first place.

The reason the mini DVD has a lower capacity is the clear plastic in the middle. You try to have a PSP deal with that clear plastic, and I doubt it'll work.

No.

You lack the equipment, the knowledge, and the intelligence.

I am not going to bother trying to list all the holes in your plan, but seriously, it will not work.

The only problem is that a PSP isn't a dvd player.

I am going to get my Dvd Player to play Blu-ray movies, because the disc are about the same size.

It won't work, and once again stop being a dumb arse.
