This thing is progressing pretty nice overall. Great job. To be honest with you Bacteria, I really disagreed with a lot of your design decisions in the past, but you have been getting better and better with each portable. Keep up the good work, i'm really looking forward to seeing this together.

You may be surprised by my reaction, but I agree with you. I am a harsh critic of my own work - if you aren't, you can't improve, is my view. With each system I have made, I have made massive improvements and learnt a lot. This is why I have enough confidence this time around to have spent an age making a final case without putting the components in during the process. That is confidence!grahf wrote:This thing is progressing pretty nice overall. Great job. To me, I can't see how I can make a better CD system case than I have done on this project. Decals aside (WIP), my system is beautiful, strong and functional; also feels natural to hold and use, and everything is in the right place. I am truly proud of this system so far and looking forward to having a few systems completed, using the same project cases and colour scheme. I will also rip apart the Mini system and make that work in my current casing. My days of using flat perspex sheeting for cases are over.
HAIL THE DAY!!! I'm glad to see you've come so far in that area.bacteria wrote:My days of using flat perspex sheeting for cases are over.
If only I had the money to do the same, I'd prolly follow your lead. Or rather than follow somebody elses path; I'd follow my own path... and leave a trail.
Please keep an eye on my HBN64 progress.

How about re-casing the multi-platform?bacteria wrote:You may be surprised by my reaction, but I agree with you. I am a harsh critic of my own work - if you aren't, you can't improve, is my view. Good, it's more interesting that way.bacteria wrote:Yes, intend to do that; but way down on my list of work to do though. May well be a year or so before I look into it, my current cycle of systems take preference to reworking an old project.
What else do you have in the works for the future?

jjhammerstein - Projects in order, after this one:
Using same case as for this project: N64, Retro Duo (SNES, NES), GBA, GP2x, if a GC fits, great, if not, no problem; MegaDrive (if I can wire a Radica to work with MegaDrive carts), re-case the Mini project; maybe Dreamcast too.
Sideline - The "Cyborg" project, I mentioned before.
Afterwards - Still have my eyes on a couple of larger systems - Saturn, Jaguar, Amstrad GX4000 (too big for my case).
Basement_Modder - Actually, I tried that earlier this morning anyway for fun, nothing to lose, took off the old decal, gave the backing plate a light sand; printed out a new decal (minus the PlayStation blue globe) and stuck it to the backing plate - sticks on really well (after the sanding) and looks fine, although the colour for the background is slightly different to the case. Easy to rectify: scan the colour of the case, then use that as the background colour.
(experimentation only):

Works well, looks good and sticks solidly to case (fine when a solid sticker rather than 'being a sticker'); however the pic above is only done as a tester; as mentioned before I am going to remake the backing plate and make it lighter. At the moment, when I turn the case upside down and give it a shake, the backing plate stays on fine, however if I make the backing plate lighter I will get even more connection. I also want to make the backing plate more akin to the shape of the case, I think when I put the circle inside before, I put it on the wrong way on the other piece
Anyway, I can make it a better shape this time around.
Anyway, will remake it. I will probably have both sides cream, sides cream; and of course better. First choice for the logo will be using the waterslide decals (clear), although options are open. I will also have the logo smaller than the one above, probably 2/3 the size - a bit big at the moment.
I like the words and the P logo in it, looks great; so keeping that idea.

Like the look of the logo man.bacteria wrote:
Just a question, but did you draw that version of the playstation logo yourself or did you find it somewhere?
( if i had to guess, im saying you made it... )
An idea, why dont you make the background of the sticker clear? and print it on a really thin piece of plastic or something...
i mean so you can stick it on anything and keep the original color of the case ( like if you stick it on a limited edition white PS2, the background will be yellow )
A friend of mine here in AU, he runs a sign shop, he makes all kinds of stickers and faceplates and crap for other people, i should gt him to work on my next case...
His shop is called "Guildford Signs", hes located in WA, heres his fax and phone: # Phone:(08) 9279 1130 # Fax:(08) 9279 6622
and address: 24 Johnson St, Guildford, WA, Australia, 6055
( also, while i was googling for his site, which i had no luck finding, i came across sorta the same thing in the UK, heres the site: http://www.guildfordsigns.co.uk/ dont know if they are any good though.... )
Anyway, the color of the sticker background does look a bit better than the bottom of the case in the picture...

Ahah, back in favour again!
BoomBox-Creations - Thanks, I like the logo. Clean and attractive. In the same way as I took the "P" letter from "Intoplay" to substitute with the Playstation logo; I intend to do the same with the N64, making the "n" from "Intoplay" into the "N" part of the "N64" logo and call it "Into64" with 64 being in Nintendo style. That was the final seal on choosing the name. Will do similar principle for the SNES, although it technically won't be as it will use a Retro Duo, however the SNES is Nintendo, so technically fine. Have to drift off line though with GP2x; other systems will work with logos in name in this system.
No, I didn't make the logo, found it by Googling for images; think it was a French website.
I bought waterslide sheets, advertised as clear; which I will use for decals when arrive. Xmas post, so may take a few days to arrive.
Taking photos during the daytime gives a different shade of colours than at night, doesn't help.
jjhammerstein - Agreed, I did mention that the logo was too big, I just wanted to see how it would look. I will have it 2/3 that size, or maybe 1/2.
Sun-Wukong - Thanks.

Worklog time:
Cut out a new back plate piece, better size than before.
I find it good to use a side cutter on the Dremel to cut a couple of millimeters from the final line, then use a sanding drum on the Dremel to get the edges smooth, then a large file to get it smooth and finish off with sandpaper.

Time to implement an idea - clear windows to show the CD spinning. The holes are at the top and bottom areas as fingers might move onto the horizontal areas.
On the pic, I cut out some paper to put in place, to show how things would look, to make sure it looked good. It does!

Orange arrows mark the marks I made to highlight the center of the four existing metal contacts, so I know where to put the magnets.
The ovals have a cross in them so it is easy to check they are central to the case. Made the distance from the edge of the backing plate to the other side of the ovals 3.7cms.

Ovals cut out. Used the two Dremel bits on the top of the pic; the flat one to bore about 2/3 through the 2mm thick perspex, so the 1mm thick magnets can sit inside the hole. Once done, used a craft knife to slice off the excess plastic and then used the other Dremel bit is to get the rough bits in the center trimmed off.

Then, pressed a small amount of putty into each hole and pressed in a magnet, making sure the final result was flat to the perspex level.

Orange arrows - put four pieces of perspex, small and slim pieces, in place to ensure the backing plate registers in the right place through the hole, the red arrows are four small blobs of putty which bridge the 1mm gap between the backing plate and the case backing, the yellow arrow is a final piece of perspex, to make sure the backing plate is in the right place.

The result is far stronger than before, the magnets have enough power to lift the backing case, as the magnets are in the right place and the weight of the backing plate is half what it was. This is excellent.
The windows will have a piece of 6thou PVC under them, so dust doesn't build up inside the case.
At the painting stage again.
