why does nintendo use such horrible screws?

Includes but not limited to: SNES, Genesis, Sega CD, PlayStation 1, Nintendo 64, Dreamcast, Game Gear and I guess the Virtual Boy.

I made one with the ballpoint pen thing so I cold open my N64 case with ease.

Here's how I did it.

1) get a broken N64

2) drill a hole all around one of the screw posts and remove.

3) Take out screw.

4) Start to melt ball point pen

5) put all of melted tip on the entire end of screw, then just cut off the extra.

If you want multiple screwdrivers for the two sizes, just do the same thing with a broken game.

Hope this helps you guys.

Any generic BIC ballpoint pen will work.

I just did the MBPP method for the first time, then 5 times after that.
the first 5 were with a bic, the plastic was way too soft, i got the most, put the plastic just stripped away when trying to unscrew, i then looked over at the pen made with a harder plastic, and used that, it worked. I got the mold, uh-oh, the pen in stuck in the case, pulled, it came out. Put it back in, turned, the screw came out.

But, MBPPs seem to strip very fast, as I put the screw back in, on the last turn it stripped, go to the store, get a lot of em.

Yeah, I'm just saying that its unwise to put faith in just one MBPP.

How about heating up the screw with your soldering iron until it heats up and melts the plastic around it, then just pull it out with needle nose pliers.
Or use a dremel tool to grind the screw until it heats up from friction and melts the plastic, then pull it out with pliers.
Both of these methods have worked for me, and left the case in perfect condition.

It's worked for me. The first couple times it just got stuck in there, but then I started using some modified methods. First I put some really thin cloth in the hole before using the pen; this worked ok. Then I tried spraying some differant types of aerosals in the hole to create a non stick surface (PAM cooking spray actually worked!); this was fast, cheap, and easy (just like my girl friend  ) and usually worked. Now I take a neddle and spread a few layers of white school glue on the middle piece and inside the groves of the screw, let it get almost dry, thhen use the pen; the pen clings to the glue instead of the screw, and then comes out easily, because the glue just melts and comes out; abit slower, but this method has never failed me.

1. Take one of the cheap and crappy BIC pens that never works when you need it.
2. Crack the writting end so you can pull out the ink tube.
3. Apply one of the methods described.
4. Use a lighter, preferrably not soldering iron, and melt the other end untill it will change shape when pressed against something, quickly shove into the hole untill it touches the screw, and apply a small amount of pressure.

Since I started using the third method, I haven't had any problems.

what type of screws are used? i know they use those horrible game screws, i mean the measurements, because some Torx security screws would keep it secure and easily taken apart (don't try to find the logic in that one...) instead of doing this every time you have to open the case.

screws are measured by threads per inch times screw thickness, so a screw with 32 thread per inch on a 1/2" thick screw would be 32X1/2.

If you don't care about the case, you could always drill the plastic away from the parimeter of the screw head, leaving it unable to hold anything.

Search ebay for "nintendo screwdriver". On 4/25/05, all I found was tri-wing ones for Gameboys and carts, but things change...

Gannon is out right now, but he should have more soon.

Another thing that works is to drill of the head(middle piece), then use a phillips(star) or flathead(line) screwdriver to unscrew it. It doesn't destroy your case or the screws if you do it this way.

Gannon's been out of those screwdrivers as long as I've been in this forum.

I used a melted pen for my n64. I lit a propane torch, melted the pen, put it in the hole, wait and it worked. I had to remelt it for every screw, sometimes trying multiple times.
