I keep hearing about how BIG and HUMONGOUS the xbox mobo is, but it's not that big in reality. It measures, 7 7/8" x 9 5/8 which is not really that big. It does have a fairly big heatsink (about half the size of a PC sink) but it could be replaced with a wider heatsink.
Now powering it off batterys that could be problem. But who said that it HAD to run off a battery to be portable? It could be wall powered and have a short life battery that would kick in if you needed to move it to a different plug. And you could power it with an inverter in the car so what's the problem?

Too bad there isnt a sure way to replace the DVD-rom with a laptop slim one. That would cut the draw of the rom by over half and the depth by the same.
@G-force. Your keeping in mind that most system's mobos are not that big? Just so anyone that hasnt taken the Xbox apart the board streches from the left sid to about the 4 controller port and most of the area from the fron to the back. Compared to the Dreamcast, GameCube or PS2 (older one) its rather big and clunky, not to mention heavy at about 7.lbs

You couldn't efficiently power it off a battery, that's why you would need an external AC power supply. That solves a ton of problems right there.
The weight is not a problem, as the case and shielding accounts for most all of it.
The DVD drive could be mounted on the back of the case between your hands.
It would be the biggest portable yet, but still not too big.

Idea for replacing HD:
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/03/14 ... ket_drive/
That thing has a 5Gb hard drive inside that uses a CompactFlash interface. Pry it open for the card and use the below doohickey
http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproductde ... 6822998002
to plug it into the XBox's IDE interface cable that goes to the HD. only 3Gb less of storage, and takes care of the weight problem. As for the DVD drive, a flip-top-type thing would be the way to go. Couple all that with a laptop battery, perhaps, and cram it into a large laptop shell. That COULD work...

You could go with a variation on the original idea except get rid of the xbox case and use something lighter. And for your hands' sake, you could make a space between the mobo and the drives for you to grip so that you don't have to hold something as thick. You could also add a strap like the one the popcorn guy a sports games has to take the weight off your hands.

I was thinking something similar to that. if this is possible, you could gut out an mp3 player and take the hard drive and use it instead of the laptop hd yall were tlking about. i have seen 5 gig hd mp3 players and 20gig ones that can store files on its hd like a usb jump drive, only larger. I havent opened up my xbox so i do not know if this will work or not, but if it would work, it would be a lighter than a laptop hd and the hd space could also be larger. its just an idea i wuz thinking about and i thought i would share itBTTF Man wrote:Idea for replacing HD:

I am a fan of hand held portables
I think Microsoft is coming out with XNA. So if they do it right, there WILL be handheld devices that will eventually be able to play XBox titles since XBox titles and hand held titles are going to be programmed with XNA. I think Microsoft will have to eventually move to hand held market if they want to be serious about XNA and windows portable gaming

Tutorial for using a new xbox hard drive :

Also, this would only work if the Compact Flash ide interface allows you to select cable select.
Ah, i just checked it and it seems it doesnt allow cable select

i think what that guy did is portable, what is going on is your confusing portable and handheld.
portable is easy to move from place to place. think about that thing at lan parties or something. he doens;t have to find a power outlet or more a huge tv around. and he can still play the game there is no mod s to controller so that makes it easy. like laptops are portable because u can do them anywhere.
the Xbox is like a laptop you just need to sit down and use it,
i have taken my xbox to some friends houses and it seems always gotta find a danm plug and their RCA jacks are always in the middle of the tv where u can't get it easy.
so lets take a poll
------
Who agrees that guy made a truely portable Xbox

Tech surpport is being to lazy to read a FAQ and having someone else do it for you over the phone.
