Yeah, at this point I'm probably more prone to get a cheaper, reliable shotgun, as I just enjoy shooting skeet more than targets. Does the Benelli come with an adjustable choke, or is it fixed? I'm just debating over whether a fixed choke gun would still be okay for bird hunting if I ever felt the urge. I shot a Mossberg 500 and I liked it better than, say, the Rem870 I've shot in the past, but the Remington also had an adjustable choke. Plus I dig the synthetic black/tactical look more than the wood or hunting style.Triton wrote:if your looking for a good affordable pump action shotgun benelli nova or supernova are nice lightweight shotguns, usually in the 200-500 range

not sure which one you saw in the black, but the Mossberg 500 my brother owns is like that. My dad's is wooden (I'm pretty sure his is a Mossberg, at least).CronoTriggerfan wrote:Yeah, at this point I'm probably more prone to get a cheaper, reliable shotgun, as I just enjoy shooting skeet more than targets. You want a fun gun to shoot? Large-bore 5/8ths sawnoff (Meaning there's still five-eights of the barrel left.) L&R shotgun loaded with slugs. The kick will knock you flat on your ass, but you'll blow decent sized holes in anything from thick sheet steel, to flesh (Though I have to say I don't agree with hunting for sport. Taking a life, animal or otherwise, should NOT be considered fun.)

I've actually never hunted before, just shot targets and skeet. But living here in Michigan, we've got seriously bad deer problems. Their population is increasing to the point where we're getting really deformed, unhealthy animals from all the incest, and in one city they've actually called in police sniper teams to kill deer on weekends out of season to keep the population in check. The same thing is starting to happen with wild turkeys, too. Crazy, no? Personally, I don't see any problem with killing them so long as you use the entire animal and don't waste it. There are some animals I could never hunt (bears, mountain lions, etc.) but I can understand shooting them in self-defense, obviously.

Double barreled shotguns are a lot of fun to hunt with, there's just something, I dunno, cheap feeling about a pump.
Side-by-side is cool if you can get it, and quite often they don't weigh anymore than a normal shotgun.
It may seem lame but a .22 is a good general-purpose "plinking" gun too.
When buying a gun it's also important to think about the ammo - is it common and cheap, or more expensive and rare?

Are you kidding? The pump is half the fun!benheck wrote:Double barreled shotguns are a lot of fun to hunt with, there's just something, I dunno, cheap feeling about a pump.

keep in mind if the length of the barrel is less than 18 inches from breech to barrel tip or if the overall length of the gun is less than 26 inches that is illegal to own in most (if not all) states! one of my dads friends has a sawed off 410 double barrel pistol, very cool but also probably very illegalYou want a fun gun to shoot? of all the weapons ive shot i think my .22 cal marlin golden 39a is my favorite to shoot, there is basically no recoil, it can shoot .22LR .22 long and .22 short bullets, lever action with a 4x32 scope and is one of the most accurate rimfire .22 rifles produced (i have mine sighted in at 75 yards and can consistently hit quarter sized targets at that range) and is the longest continuous production rifle in the country or mebe the world! since the late 1800s to present nearly unchanged!

I'm curious as to the reasoning behind that. What makes sawed-offs illegal? they're better for home protection since you don't have to work the long barrel around walls.Triton wrote:keep in mind if the length of the barrel is less than 18 inches from breech to barrel tip or if the overall length of the gun is less than 26 inches that is illegal to own in most (if not all) states! one of my dads friends has a sawed off 410 double barrel pistol, very cool but also probably very illegalYou want a fun gun to shoot? Spread much farther, much greater chance innocents will get hurt.grossaffe wrote:I'm curious as to the reasoning behind that. I would expect that to not be much of a factor in close-quarters combat.Valium wrote:Spread much farther, much greater chance innocents will get hurt.grossaffe wrote:I'm curious as to the reasoning behind that. I think its because it makes it easier to conceal them. Not that criminals care, but if its illegal, its just that much harder for them to get. You can get shotguns that are shorter (such as this one), but I believe they're identified differently and require permits.grossaffe wrote:I would expect that to not be much of a factor in close-quarters combat.Valium wrote:Spread much farther, much greater chance innocents will get hurt.grossaffe wrote:I'm curious as to the reasoning behind that. right, because its so hard to get a legal shotgun and saw off the barrel. Politicians are stupid.vskid wrote:I think its because it makes it easier to conceal them. having a regular shotgun is fine, posessing a sawn off shotgun that is lss than 26" is not. because its concealable and doesnt have any real use as a weapon other than to conceal or use in a place where a regular shotgun may be difficult such as in a house or vehicle.
