I've tried soldering the j-pack directly to the board, but it never worked. I tried three times, making sure there were no shorts, and it never worked. I just decided to leave the expansion slot in, because most games worth playing require the expansion pack anyway.

Whatever size the top box is is PERFECT for an N64 cart. I had to chop them down and dremel it a LOT to make the lids fit on again. Those boxes are tapered.

Mine has actually been done (except for final painting basically) for about 3-4 months.I could have called it 100% complete but It wasn't quite up to the quality level I was going for. Few people take the time to make everything perfect, but it always pays off.

Edit: The dual shoulder buttons are L and R on top and Z and Start for the bottom ones.

Gordon1 - Looks pretty good. A bit naughty to hyjack the thread although quite reasonable I think in the circumstances. As Nintendo tend to bring their systems out in strange colours when their initial system release has been out for a while, having your system orange looks in keeping with some colours Nintendo use (red, lime green, purple, cyan, etc). Quite brave going for a vibrant colour as it shows up any and all imperfections. Any particular reason your cart slot isn't in the centre? No love for d-pad? (some games like Pokemon Puzzle League work better with a d-pad).

It will be interesting to see Neildo_64's system finished and how it compares, even though it might be worth changing the title on this thread, as your system using this type of case was not the first, Gordon1's was, and he documented it back in June / early July as I recall - completion is the key to being the "first" to well, (ahem), complete!

Well, mine was the first when I started it and I remember seeing Gordons build thread with just his components laid out on the case the same day I finished mine. It was done, I just wanted to make it better before I posted all the goods about it. As far as actually posting pics and stuff, yep Gordon, you beat me to it.

I haven't messed with mine over the past few months (except to play it occasionally) until last week when I decided to make the case a little nicer (not that it wasn't great already) and finally post it here. Whoever finishes first, either way, we will still BOTH have the first ZN-40 N64 portable. High Five Gordon.

I think his cart slot is offset because of the Z button and also because his N64 mobo sets off to one side to allow room for the joystick and he put the board in, then soldered the cart slot solidly in place on the case directly behind the pins on the mobo. Gordon, correct me if I'm wrong, but thats what I figured.

So, Gordon, what all do you have to do to finish yours? Just the jumper pak stuff?

Neildo_64 explained exactly why it is not centered. I have no use for the d-pad.

All I have to do is the jumper pak things and then I am done.... well if everything else works.

I just finished putting the final coats on. No pics yet until i get a camera. Now all I have to do is put some finishing touches on and reassemble it.

It is dark gray and uber sexy. I should have pics of the final product within 24 hours.

I finished it. Ahhh...Well, here are some pics I took really quickly. I will have a pretty in depth walk-through posted sometime (working on it) but until then, here are some pictures to hold you over. Well, I'm off to cram in some Zelda time before bed. The screen looks really dark because of the flash. It is actually quite bright. I have since found the screws that are missing in these pictues (the corners of the black boxes on the back)

Rub on decals. I found a bunch in some electronics stuff I bought a while back. You should see my NOAC portable front. I'm not sure when it will show its face around here.

And in case anyone is wondering, YES those are LEDs for the volume and brightness. They don't light up, but they look kick ass.

Awesome! Now, not putting it down, because that is sweet, but it doesnt appear to be much slimmer than mine. Of course now, don't go get pics from this site and rebut my words, as I have been working on the internal cart slot. Which makes mine the first real enclosure: as Gordon1's cart slot is external. And I will be cutting down the sides by a few mm's.

But seriously: Welcome to the completed ZN-40(5) portables area! Population: Me and LoB and a few others.

It isn't that much slimmer, but has a lot less wasted space and is of the highest quality. I could have stuffed more stuff inside, like gordon, but I liked this look so I kept with it. I would much rather it look like this than be a zn-45, but thats just my preference.
