PAL/NTSC psone LCD question

If you're making a portable you probably need something to watch it on. (Unless you want to guess what's happening in the game, but I wouldn't advise that) Anyway, this forum is your "Hacking a pocket TV/screen" one-stop solution. Share your experiences and knowledge here.

PAL/NTSC psone LCD question

Post by mchammer »

Hey all-

Had a question that i think could be rather simple but heck, i'll throw it out there anyway...

Situation:

PAL Gamecube - Modded with qoob chip (therefor allows different format games to be played ie NTSC/PAL)

Question: If i were to connect an NTSC PSOne LCD screen to the above gamecube, would it work properly?

Reason for application: I live in Australia and PAL PSOne screens are IMPOSSIBLE to come by - so i wanna know if the above will work before i snatch one of the net.

If anyone has any light to shed on this (hidden forums/posts/or ur own experience) - i'd appreciate it.

The fact the GC is PAL would indicate that it outputs in PAL, so you need a PAL screen. There are alternatives to the PSone screen, Zenith, etc.

Well you can set the refresh rate on PAL gamecubes to either 50hz or 60hz so I think it might not be such a problem here. I have no experience with it though.

There are more differences between PAL and NTSC than just the refresh rate. In particular, resolution and color carrier frequency.

I know it can be hard to find a ps1 screen in Australia. What you have to do is keep an eye out for one and be ready to pounce when a chance comes along. My first screen I bought was $100 from the UK, I offered YYTU money for his screen before he decided he would finish his portable and my second screen that will eventually go towards a ps2 portable (because an xbox portable would just not work) I spotted on ebay two days after finishing (and I use that word extremely loosely obviously) my N64p.
