K this time Im doing it gamecube portable.

Post by dragonball345 »

I finally have some time now that its summer and since our schools under construction and school might be pushed back a week i might hve even more time. That aside ive already got an idea of how im gonna do it. I'll have some drawings up tonight for model design but since finding my second gamecube which doesnt have a power supply its allowed me to cut corners and while I might lose battery life on the dirct 12 volt input i plan on getting around 9000 mah worth of batteries so i think Ill be fine. Ill post up some pictures of the mobo too :) wish me luck.

I'm making a drawup for a gameboy like portable which is what ive had in mind for a year now but i also have a both a widcreen and a 4-3 ps1 screen so i could do either landscape or portrait. Also keep in mind one of the screens is gonna end up going to the snesp i have in mind. I also wanna make that like a gameboy so i have some descisions to make.

Newer pictures which show just ho0w slim a gamecube is normally. without the drive

UPDATE

I've removed the area for the video connection and plan on connecting the screen once i have batteries just to make sure everything works.

Batteries have been decided apon. I will be using 4 2300 mah 7.2 volt lithium batteries. Then will be stepping up the voltage to 12 volts for my gamecube and just connecting the 7.2 volts directly to my screen.

The case will be landscape with a widescreen 7" lcd allowing me to use the ps1 screen for my snesp.

I bought some liquid nail today so that should help me with the case and have found hat a dremel is very effective for removing the plastic ontop of pins and it make sure you have no lifted areas ill show you guys a picture later. but im going to duluth tommorow any suggestions on what parts i should get while im there. I know im already getting some tact switches breadbord (can never have enough), a new tip for my iron since mines mutilated. some of that stuff which cleans your soldering tip and a transformer for the power (need help on which one). The only reason im getting these parts in duluth is because the local circuit city isnt exactly electrician friendly.

UPDATE

Well after going to Duluth this weekend I returned with a few goodies to help me along so I decided to work on the thing and try to finish it this week if i can get all the parts. I have planned out the case completely and it will be a vac form. It going to be landscape and the thickest point in the middle will be 7 cm worth of guts and maybe a total of a max 10cm and thats max. I am planning on making a cover for he cd rom drive and will be trying to make it look as professional as possible with battery covers that pop out even...... maybe. I'm off to wire up the disk drive to its control board though now so ill update a bit later as to anything else and maybe some design concept draws.

Half the fun of relocating a disk drive............

If that were true, then, how WIDE will your portable be?!?!?

Because somehow I doubt that the DD in it of itself is that thin.

Good luck, you'll need it

What kind of plastic are you using for your vaccuum forming? 3mm just doesn't seem like very much thickness for both case sides. Are you trimming down the DD any? All that plastic on it can't be that necessary, is it?

I havent really figured out what type im using yet for forming but im thinking 3-4 mm should be sufficient. The plastic on the disk drive can only be trimmed down a max of 1 cm and since thats only in certain places I would have to make various supports to give certain parts enough clearance, which I dont really feel is necessary or smart given this is my first portable.

ugh gamecube disc drives suck, i hate them! so freaking thick! without that damn thing my entire gamecube portable would have been about 1.75 inches thick (4.5cm appx) :( with it and keeping the disc door mine wound up being 7.62cm or pretty close so you shouldnt have any problem (if you dont put the door on) keeping it at around 7cm

1/4" thick is nearly 6 mm. I can't imagine that it would be flexible enough to easily vaccuum form. The thicker it is, the more heat it requires to get flexible. If you click on that seller's "Store Home", he's got some 1/8" stuff, that ends up being about 3mm thick. Personally, I've never vac formed with plexi, so I don't know how it behaves.

K i looked up in the vac froming thread and am on the lookout for the styrene that was mentioned, my dads just wary of buying from that store because they just got their card stolen a little while ago. Anywhere on ebay or something you can think of. O yea and batteries might be changed to 2 6600 Mah batteries for a total of 13.2 amps for 60$ shipped they are big but will work into my portables design. how much play time you think i will get?

Ah, I see you went back and changed a few mm's to cm's.

Yeah, them measurements will get ya!

Actually I hadn't seen the wiring of the DD until now, are you sure those wires will be able to handle the load? Or am I just confused here?(the more likely situation

Sry dont understand what you mean about measurements. But the wires are single strand kynar wire its pretty good stuff and would be about as thick as the pins if they were rolled up. They are also about the biggest wire youd get on there without too much trouble. But any idea about battery life from what ive seen around Id say it will be the most any portables ever gotten. And the best part is it will go with the case how i have it now.

Update!

Just bough the batteries 2x 6600 Mah ones like I said theyll basically be like handles for the back of the case where you grab for the controls so theyll fit in too. I'm also buying tact switches today and perhaps the styrene if i can find out where to buy it so help please on that one. Also if anyone knows where I can get something to boost my voltage to 12 volts from 7.2 in a parralel circuit that would be beautiful. I dont think I'll get much more done now besides rewiring the disk drive since I still need to get my stuff before I can test and plan some more so please guys little help.
