Extreme Makeover: N64p Edition

Post by JAY »

It has been almost two years since I built my portable N64. Since I was never satisfied with the case that it first appeared in, I slowly worked on a more appealing one in my spare time. After almost two years of off-and-on construction (accentuating the "off'), it is finally finished. In case you missed the first one, here it is:

Unsightly.

And here is the new portable:

I borrowed G-force's case concept, with some distinct alterations of my own.

I added another cell to the battery packs to make them 8.4V, but also had to take out one of the battery packs. I switched to 8.4V because the 7.2V battery would barely discharge to half of its capacity before the voltage dropped below the screen's threshold. The other battery pack can still be used as an external supply, in addition to the PSOne power supply, through the jack on the back of the system. There is also a port for the memory pak on the back of the system, but due to the slot's placement, the rumble pak's bulbous case does not allow for it to fit into the slot. Although is looks bulky, especially near the bottom, the sides where you would grip it to play are still pretty thin and easy to hold. Since it is essentially the original N64 case, the expansion pak is compatible, and the additional controller ports are functional. There is no A/V out, so the first controller slot will never be needed, and thus has been disabled (I kept it in for appearance and symmetry). Sorry, no internal pictures yet. I'll be adding a 7.5V DC converter once it arrives in the mail, so that will be the time when I reopen it.

AmAzInG! wow that would be a nice portable to have!, but I'm wondering, why put the controls on the top? that would be very awkward to me.

I know of only 3-4 other people who can achieve that level of quality finish when using body filler. Great job! The paint job is awesome as well.

We're running the noobs outta town! :P

Anyways, That looks incredibly sleek. I did a similar design, check out my 3rd in the new section. Nice job, I know that you will get your work's worth out of it!

To answer the question about that controls position, it is easier to distribute the weight like that.

I'm gonna have a tough time getting good comments, because I just realized mine is not gonna be sexy at all, but maybe the mods will feel bad for me and give me a sticky
