I agree that this thread probably can be locked now and, even if Ben wasn't concerned about the site, I'm glad that it's now down.

Well I guess I arrived late to this party. Seems some of you had a great time trying to take down his website via DDoS, others contacting his forum members, some emailing his domain admin, and boy oh boy those of you that call/emailed/texted the poor bastard.

I have to say it's great to see that a community was able to take down a scammer like this. And well Bic might not approve, and the ends don't justify the means, it's still a success in my book.

This really is a funny story to read.

The ends do justify the means in this case. The alternative was that the scammer would make a fortune out of conning people and degrading this site indirectly. Surely no-one would let that continue? Sure it gets a bit much by personal contact to the guy, or posting/courier lots of heavy things to his home without paying postage (as no return address on parcel - I haven't ever done that BTW!), or something else mean; but con men deserve no remorse. He got the point he was losing and gave up, thanks to the membership here. :P

If he spent 7 months on it you would think he would want to show off his own work. Because I know I would. Unless he hadn't built one yet and had made blueprints but then why would he try to build them with no experience? Therefore I will assume that you were lied to.

then he should have posted pics of his own work. not of ben's. that's just stupid of him to use someone else's work to try to sell your own. not to mention illegal in the way he was doin it.
they call me the Queen of Bondo, though maybe i should be called the Queen of Epoxy Putty

Why would he put together blueprints, especially since Ben put the originals up on Engadget? (At least for the 360 and Wii.) If he really was building his own, he should have shown it off, rather than using someone else's work in a deceiving manner.

Besides, the only place he gave due credit was in passing in the YouTube video description; not anywhere prominent, or even anywhere on his website.

Agreed. Using someone else's work is deception, and all scams are based on deception. If he has these blueprints, why not use parts of them to promote his projects? He doesn't have to show enough to give away anything major, but it would be his own work. If he's waited seven months, what's a few more months while he completes his own finished product?

Guys,
While I think that this guy probably was ripping people off, I really think this community handled it very poorly.

By personally attacking him (doing whoami's to find out his information, and going by his house), and by doing server attacks, you are giving the impression that such attacks are okay. I really don't think that it was a very effective way of dealing with the problem, instead simply warning people using his forum, and asking him politely to give credit to Ben in his photos would have done the job.

If anyone who doesn't like a website can start up a server war, or start harassing the owner the internet is pretty screwed up if you ask me.

Bacteria, you are a webserver admin now, I don't think it would be very cool if someone started calling you at home to ask you questions about modding a N64 would it?

Anyways, just thought I would put that out there.
