Bought a Mega Drive yesterday.

Includes but not limited to: SNES, Genesis, Sega CD, PlayStation 1, Nintendo 64, Dreamcast, Game Gear and I guess the Virtual Boy.

Bought a Mega Drive yesterday.

Post by DaBeast »

Hi all, i was looking around on the fleemarket (you know, a place where everyone trys to sell their old stuff that they dont use). I bought a Sega Mega Drive and a GameBooster for the N64, wich is an odd piece of hardware. Anyways, the Mega Drive was sold by someone i knew that she dint know much about it, so i could get it for 5 bucks. It included a lot of controllers/flying sticks (in total about 6 or so) and one game called 'Street Racer'

However, it dint came with any adaptor, nor a connection cable for the TV. Also, the casing was worn, but ive cleaned it up a bit, unscrewed it and used some contactspray on the cartridge connector.

Now my question(s) are:
-Wich games should i get ASAP (i know sonic is good, but wich ones are the best?)
-Is that game i got with it called 'Street Racer' hard to find/rare? Im sure its probaly not, but you never know. Just checking out.
-Wich are the cheapest way to go to get those connectors? I was thinking about modding it to RGB, so i wont have to pay 15 bucks for a connector sold on ebay. As for the adaptor i probaly could just use a universal one? Or if anyone has those connectors/adaptor spare, would you sell it to me?
-What are the main differences between the SMS and SMS2 and between MD and MD MK2? Also, what the hell is the 32x suposed to be?
//Edit:-Wich one is the game where you fight trough levels in a street (with some mortal combat styles moves to) is a sideview game? I remember playin the game in my childhood and i loved it! but i cant remember the damn name :O .

Thanks <3

Dunno what games are good. I know what I like, but I don't know what you'd like. Wikipedia, and tons of other sites have lists of games for the Mega Drive.

As for the power supply, you'll probably have to get your hands on a universal one. That's your best bet, anyway. If you have an Ace Hardware in your town, you can get one with six or seven common console tips for about $15. Radio Shak wants $30 for the adapter, and $7 each for the tips.

What does the connector for the AV cord look like? I know if it's a Mega Drive 2, you can just use a Genesis 2 AV cord. Those run about $5.

The 32X is an add-on system for the Genesis. It plugs in the cart slot and allows you to play more games. Google it.

And I believe the game you';re looking for is Street Fighter.

EDIT: Street Racer looks like a pretty common game, going by a google search. It runs fairly cheap in the UK and AU.

Nah, its not Street Fighter, because in Street Fighter its one on one, but the game im talking about has multiple weaker-then-you enemies. I also remember you can play with 2 players, side by side. And at the end of each stage there was a boss (at least i think it was, since i havnt played it for like 8 years or so.)

Well, i know there exist lists, but then again, those are uge. Arnt there any common games to get besides sonic series?

About the 32X, i know its an add on unit, just like the mega CD. but whats so special about them? Does it have better gfx then the standart games? I figured that the mega cd games are mainly for storage (size of the game)?

I dont know if the AV cable connection are the same, but it has a couple of outputs. Reading from left to right: EXT. (looks like a serial cable, my best guess is that its for those extensions like Mega CD)- RF OUT - A/V OUT - adaptor. Here is a pic:

Unfortunaly i dont have an ace hardware store, i know places where you can get a universal one, but they mostely cost around 30 euro's wich is a bit much. Ive tryd looking on DealExtreame (free shipping FTW!) but they dont seam to sell any exept a laptop one wich outputs 15-40V wich ofcourse is too much. Any other places where you can buy these for cheap?

Thanks for the reply btw

Is the RF OUT the same as a composite cable? Because it seams to fit. If it is the same, ive got 1 of the 2 problems solved.

RF is antenna. Composite goes to the 8 pin connector.

The EXT is for the modem. The Mega CD goes on the slot in the right.
Family Computer Micro (Famicom Micro): 10%!

My collection! Beware 56k! Not updated! SOON

I Know what you mean, the connector on the back of the console has the same connector as composite but the the other end it has a anntena cable. I think its called an RF cable.

Two 32-bit proccessors and better sound capabilities. the only games that took advantage of the hardware and looked great were Virtua Fighter and Virtua Racing.

good Genny games= Gunstar Heroes and Comix Zone. those are some of my faves

You can plug a composite cable into the RF jack and then use an RCA -> Coax converter to get the "RF cable" on the other end, and then just use that. Make sure you get a well-shielded RCA cable though, or your video will look horrible.

That works very well. Personally, though, in order to get that good shielding, I take a regular coax cable, then cut off one end. I solder an RCA jack to that end, and ground it to the shielding on the coax cable. It's a quick job, and the results are good.
