The NES SP (W.I.P)

Post by Dark-Aries »

OK, after reading around here for awhile I thought I should make a portable...of one of my favorite systems too! I found a perfect case to hold everything...a GBA SP. I found one in my hosue with a super cracked lcd screen...and for the price of a screen I bought a barely used gba sp with charger for the same price...so I painted the case (Well I'm not done it yet) and after looking at some mods here I think it's doable to fit a NOAC in there...obviously the thing will be heavily slimmed down.

Things to take out

-Cartidge port, I'll either use built in games or wire my own to sticks out from the bottom...maybe use a GB game I don't care about to hide the wires?

That's all I can hink of right now...I'll use the GBA's speaker as it saves me some money, and I'll probably have to make a very tight squeeze with everything....but with a cartridge port already gone...all I need is tv out, a battery and a controller...maybe I could even use the sp's battery.....maybe....

so do you guys think this will work or no?

Also what screen would I have to buy? obviously psone screens are to big...

I can't recall the dimensions of the GBA screen off the top of my head, but there are 2.5 LCDs and smaller available. Rekarp's using one from AEIComp that fits in an Atari cart. Pretty sure that would be small enough. Try googling AEIComp LCDs and seeing what you get.

as much as I love thhose AEI screens...they're to expensive for my tastes..but I did find some 2.5 car lcds with video inputs already wired for 20-40 bucks...don't know how thin I could get it though...or how much power they take...but still 40 bucks , maybe 50 versus over 75....for a start I think I'd choose the cheaper screen....:)

Are there any NOAC's that fit in a Gba SP? They all look a little too wide to me. Not to mention batteries..

Watch out as some of those cheap car LCDs are not TFT but are passive matrices. Think Sega nomad blurring.

The auctions say nothing about what type of screen they are...just that they are new LCD screens that supprt NSTC/PAL with autmatic Switchover and that they have...whatever resolution..I forget it now...

Sorry for the bumptity bump....But what NOAC would I need...one that can be portablized the most...IF a NOac can be crammed in an NES controller then hopefully this can be done corect? Even If I have to create a sort of stand that rsembles a gameboyplayer to give extra space it'll still be very protable...expect thicker....So what do you guys reccommend...

How about an N-Joypad? It has a fairly small and square PCB about a quarter of which can be shaved off (the bit underneath the AV connectors) and no cart slot. It might just fit into an SP case, but I bet it would be tight.

It is definitely possibly. You just need to find a thin screen. AEIcomp sells some nice ones but even I think those are to thick. Plus battery space is an issue.

That NOAC you suggested seems like a good choice Calamity. Thank for that tip...looks like after some hacking I'll get it to fit...

Also about the screen...what should I use? A camcorder LCD or a car lcd? which would would be thinner...the screens from AEI are to expensive for me at the moment...although they are very nice...my budget just doesn't allow it...:(

If you can find a thin LCD that accepts composite then you are good to go. I am pretty sure an AEIcomp screen wont fit in the lid due to the controller board.

OKay...the car lcds at ebay are for 50 bucks nomatter how I look...if one is cheaper, the shippinhg brings it back to 50...Scourered DealExtreme..the only thing I found close to using is a onestation...which won't work....or will it? I wouldn't want to destroy it anyways so....that's gone...

Anybody know of a good reliable and cheap source for a screen? Oh and I tried looking up for pocket tvs....but they also come up to 50 dollars for me sadly...:(

$50 is close to the cheapest you will find for the size you are wanting to get. i think the cheapest i've seen them for is ~$45. the good ones, with much smaller boards, are closer to ~$75 (zate screens). good luck on your search.
they call me the Queen of Bondo, though maybe i should be called the Queen of Epoxy Putty
