N64 Portable screen cost?

Post by DaBeast »

Well, seeing the N64 laptop tread im thinking of building one of my own :P (tough i have a hugh respect for the original idea/maker, and i dont want to copy it or anything). Well, ive ben thinking, the power suply shoulnd be a problem (ive seen a philips external power suply for PSP and stuff, 2 of those should be more then enough, altough im not wure what current they output). But now ive ben looking on ebay for a decent screen. All i found for something to easy connect is a Xbox portable screen with a very small 15cm across (6"). Well thats way too small in my oppinion. Im want a 15" or a bit smaller.

However, i cant find any screen thats big enough, tough easy to connect. Any sugguestions?

Thanks for the help,

Is price an option? If not then the best screen I know of for this kind of application is an AEI comp 17" or 15" screen. Here have a URL link to the 15 inch monitor. It isn't too expensive really but the 17" is about double the price.

It will suck a bit over three times more than an unmodded ps1 screen off the top off the top of my head but it takes 12V which should be easy enough to find.

Oh and speaking of my laptop 64 (assuming that you were reffering to mine) does anyone know what I've got to do now that I've finished it to get the fancy portabliser title under my name, PM a mod perhaps?

You can just buy a cheap LCD TV and just hack it

something like

Thanks for the link evilteddy. Yeah, i think i was refering to you (keep it up btw). Is that screen easy to connect? Wel money is not a real problem, because i can always work for it and save. Is it easy to connect and stuff? I see that the output signal is NTSC, is there a PAL one or so? Because i want to make it dual, i mean, with a switch so you can connect it to a regular TV if needed.

Rekarp: Wont regular LCD TV's suck a lot of its power? Because theire not designed to be power-saving i guess. I think portable's do.
//Edit:How about a laptop screen? Is that easy to hook up?

Thanks for the help guys

Here's a write up I did for another site that I Moderate on :

Here's a quick answer for those who wants to use a laptop LCD for display for other projects.

A basic LCD monitor you buy over the counter is already prepackaged with everything you need to hook up to a common video input jacks such as VGA, RCA, S-Video. The basic components are LCD screen, controller, and backlight inverter. The controller has an input and output. The input connections are either VGA, RCA, or S-Video. The output then connects to the LCD screen. The backlight inverter takes low voltage power like 12v and steps it up to a few hundred or thousand volts for the backlight to light up the LCD.

Laptop LCDs come with the LCD screen and the backlight built in. But it does not have a seperate controller. The controller is built into the laptop. This is the part that most people dont understand why they cant use a laptop LCD. You need a controller to convert standardized VGA, RCA, S-video signal to non standardized LVDS signal. LCD screens dont cost much. You can buy a laptop LCD screen for a few dollars on ebay though they can get as high as $100-$300. The controller is what's gonna cost you the most.

The controller has to be specially programed for the specific Lcd you are going to use. Also a special Lvds cable has to be made to connect the Lcd to the controller.

Right now the only easy option for getting a controller for your laptop lcd is Ebay. Ebay seller tywong888 with Ebay Store Electronics Kits and Parts Store has 2 different controllers . You will have to buy the controller you want and then email the seller your Lcd model number. This is the actual model # on the back of the Lcd and not the laptop model number. This means you will have to disassemble your laptop to get this number. If your Lcd is compatiable the seller will ship you a working controller with all necessary parts in 2-3 weeks. If it's not compatiable he will refund your money.

*These controllers do not support 1:1 pixel mapping. Everything will be stretched to the Lcd's native resolution.*

@hailrazer, That means you can basicly use any laptop screen if the number is compatible?

Great! Laptop screens are far more cheap then a LCD tv.

Btw, for the power, 2 (even one i think) of these should be enough?
