Thinnest possible - well, my screen and control section of my MK1 version of my current project was 15mm (although joysticks stuck out), current one (MK2) 19mm (joysticks flush); N64 section on handheld areas 14mm; however this includes two x 2mm layers of perspex (one of which is only needed as my system half is detachable), so down to 31mm thick. For a dedicated system you could maybe trim off 2mm extra off the height, so I guess the thinnest you could get an N64 using a PSone screen is 29-30mm, at a pinch; although of course the mid section will be thicker to accommodate the cart and mount. My combined system (MK2) is only 33mm tall.

Are you hoping to out-do and make the thinnest? Because that would be pretty awesome. You'd have to share your designs :)

The thinnest n64p could be exceptionnally thin, But extremly wide. I'd have to say the l64, or sifufs, but I really dont know.

SS

EDIT: I searched for his n64p progress, looks like no work has been done for 2 years now. I'd like to see something done, atleast.

No, the L64 was not that thin, probably about the same thickness as yours, SS.

Yes, if you made a case twice the width you could make the system half the thickness, 15mm; but that would be silly.

Seriously guys, the figures I quoted are the thinnest. 30-34mm is fine for holding a portable comfortably - mine at 33mm is fine; if I had made it without the extra perspex needed to keep the two sections separate, 29mm is as low as it goes.

Did anyone get a psp joystick to work? That is a big step towards thinness.

Ive actually been working on mine, but I havent posted anything and I probably wont until its done (its very close). As for the thinnest, no I'm not trying to make mine the thinnest, but it will be one of the smallest. I'm using a ZN-40 case, so you basically know exactly what it will look like, well from the front at least.

Yes, they work, but from what I read, the joystick on the PSP sucks in comparison.

Pinout:

I have a feeling this was done by Ben on a PSP mod when he put a proper joystick in it to replace the PSP one (the joystick attached to the side of course). I don't have the original pic, but did my own version from cut and paste of the original pic (for my future reference), as above. Anyway, it is easy enough to find the wiring needed, there are only 4 connections on a joystick; one is ground (easily found), the others are VCC data, V, H - you know if you have VCC line ok as you get movement when moving the joystick; if H and V are the wrong way about you swap them over!

It's hard to get N64 portables very thin unless you ditch the cartridge slot entirely (what I plan on doing) or spread things out horizontally. It's hard to get adequate cooling in a case that thin.

I would also be interested in joystick alternatives - the stock analog is just huge!

I should be getting my hands on a third party conroller when I get my next mobo(#6) so, I'll have something to play with.

SS - Yes, I mentioned in my threads that there are differences in the joysticks from the PS1 controller and the GameCube ones - one is thinner, can't remember off-hand which (in my postings though). They are much smaller than the official N64 ones. Nicer to use too.

marshallh - Indeed, you can get the N64 mobo and small heatsinks and some airflow with the system 14mm tall. If you incorporate an N64 cart, you need more like 22mm or so. Having the cart on the side is fine although that increases the width of the system somewhat.

You could have the N64 mobo and controllers, etc; PSone screen and mobo, controllers, etc, and game cart all in a system 15mm tall, however everything would be flat and you would end up with a width of about 60cms wide and about 17cms high; excluding batteries. That would be silly - best to have system 30mm tall and under half the size; there is the mid section which is ideal for the cart slot as your hands don't get to this area when holding the system, which also means you can add a little height (5mm or so) to the mid section for airflow. Oh yes, that is a basic description of my system!! :D

marshall, this is a little off subject, but what are you replacing the cartridge slot with? SD memory? Is such a feat possible?

Hazmat B your back!!!! :D I think Marhsall is probably talking about the flash cart he is creating. If you go to his site (www.retroactive.be) you will see that the cartridge will have 8 mb on board and he is talking about switching on the last pin so he could use two and have 16Mb. As a reference Mario 64 is 8Mb and later games like super smash bros are 16Mb. Ideally he would interface it with SD or some other external media.

I'm sure he will use more memory that 16mb, as that is not that practical if it can only hold those small games.
