The Battle of Cheap-Ass Flash-Based DAPs!

I'm fairly happy with my Sansa C series with Rockbox. The battery life is excellent (20+ hours of play time), and the battery doesn't drain much, if at all, even when sitting unused. I lost the charger for over two months, used the player off and on, and it still had 50% charge when I finally found the cable.
Games aren't that great on it, as the screen is passive LCD, so movement smears. Solitaire is the only game I can stand to play for extended times. Though, showing that the player can play Doom is impressive to most people I show it to. The main feature I feel RockBox brings to this player is increased codec support; by default it only supports MP3 and WMA, but now supports those plus OGG, AAC (unencrypted), FLAC and more.
Pending you can find a non-V2 still, the 2GB costs ~$40 online, and you can upgrade with micro-SD (2GB usual max) with the regular firmware or micro-SDHC (8GB is the affordable max) with RockBox.

I love Creative players. My old Zen Xtra lasted me from 2003 to earlier this year when the headphone connector broke off. Probably going to repair it this summer
Got an Archos 605 wifi. May be a bit big for what you want, but the 405 is nice and small. Only problem is that Archos charge money for plugins like internet and audio/video codecs

That's why you go for the 04 series. It may not be as fast, but it's all free.DK wrote:I love Creative players. My old Zen Xtra lasted me from 2003 to earlier this year when the headphone connector broke off. Probably going to repair it this summer![]()

Yeah, I thought that was lame, too, my friend bought one. Though we found that there were ways around that...DK wrote:I love Creative players. My old Zen Xtra lasted me from 2003 to earlier this year when the headphone connector broke off. Probably going to repair it this summer![]()

It's coming down to a Zen Micro, Sansa e200, or an older iPod for me. Each has its pros and cons, I'll have to do some review/price searching. Thanks for all the input, guys.
check woot.com regularly, they get some pretty good deals on this kind of thing (sansa e200s are on there all the time)CronoTriggerfan wrote:Yeah, I thought that was lame, too, my friend bought one. I have a Sansa e280 loaded up with rockbox. I got it off of eBay (with a SquareTrade warranty) for $71 shipped about 3 months ago. It's served me well so far.
Although I did have to go into recovery mode when I first got it and reformat the thing because it wouldn't boot normally. But it's been rock solid ever since, and the battery life is amazing
One of my friends has a Creative Zen Micro, and he seems to like it a lot.

Another vote for sansa e200 over here. Mine has taken a beating but it still keeps going. (I stepped on it while camping and lost every other line on the top 1/3 of the lcd screen... lol)
One annoyance: if you have an SD card it, it adds about 30-60 seconds to the boot up time, as it has to search the entire card every time.
Anyways, you can get an 8gb factory refurb for about $90 around these parts. or get a 4gb if you are on a budget. I have a 2gb + 2gb card, its plenty for me.
Has anyone seen the new line of sansa players? They are sexy.

"Linux is only free if your time is worthless"
If you use rockbox, you can avoid the updating of the library on each boot. I also read that the latest official firmware updates the library faster.timmeh87 wrote:Another vote for sansa e200 over here. Mine has taken a beating but it still keeps going. don't know when you last used rockbox, but they have since improved battery life. its still not as battery efficient as the OF, but it has improved. i can try to get a battery benchmark for you if you like.timmeh87 wrote:Indeed, but last time I had rockbox installed it used the battery twice as fast and didn't read memory cards.
Did they fix the battery problem?
