Commissioning a project, MSX2 Laptop.

Post by mills »

Hello everyone. I have an MSX2 that I really want turned into a laptop.

This is the model that I have, It's a panasonic FSA1 MSx2.

If you are not familiar, the msx was an 8 bit computer system released in Japan and europe. The system is housed entirely within it's own keyboard, it has 2 cartridge slots for games. You can add a floppy drive, a hard drive, and even upgrade the ram. My model has 64kb main ram and 128kb video ram. It's equipped with RCA and RGB out.

Let me know what you think!

For future reference, stuff like this really does belong in The Trading Post. For now, though, I'll keep it here. It'll be interesting to see what kind of bites you get at it! :P

hmmm, this has me quite interested. How big of a screen would you be looking for? do you want a battery? how many volts does it run off? what are the dimensions? What would you be willing to spend? Can you post some electrical specs? For some reason I am very interested in this.

I think the build cost would be in the area of $350 + labor if you include the msx2. That's basically just the LCD, Battery, and case parts.
Hope someone here can help you, I'm already busy with projects/work :P

I will check it out and let you know the dimensions and whatnot. And I'm talking a pro custom job here, not a frankenstein hack job :)

I dont think that a battery is going to be possible. The specs on the 1st gen are 100v (wtf?) at 30w so it might be like the 360 and ps3 laptops. AKA it has to be plugged in. but I am still interested.

Note: this was my first case I have ever built, and I have learned a massive amount on what not to do.

This is the beginnings of my n64p (shows soldering skillz)....

(Obviously this will be put on hold)

I built a backpack speaker system in grade 8.
Minibike in grade 9
ps1p in 10
etc.

So, can I get some dimensions?

I resent that remark! my frankenstein hack jobs ARE pro custom work! I would be totally interested in taking on this comission but it would have to wait until mid to late june or early july before i can fit it into my schedule. already have a snes commissioned that i am still working on finishing and after that a custom GP2X mod which shouldn't take too long to finish!
here are some examples of my work
psoneP shell

SNES64 controller,

i have gotten better and developed some new techniques since i built that ~2 years ago! and i have some design ideas for a laptop that would be very cool.

my price, if you include the system would be cost of parts plus some predetermined amount for labor (~200-300$ negotiable, we can work out details if your interested)

Wow, thank you for showing interest, guys. I guess my decision would be based on who can do the best quality job altogether, Custom case etc. Im sorry I will do my best to get those dimensions for you. I have the MSX2 and I could send it out to the person who will do the job, would it be possible to pay for it when it's done? You can hold the unit until I pay for it, or we can work something out. Again, thanks for showing interest you guys, ploease give me your input in to how you would picture this project turning out.
