You might want to replace the button batteries with something non-toxic. The cells will likely start to leak given enough time. The stuff inside them is fairly toxic too.

dont worry the glue holding those button covers on will be gone long before then, if they have not started to come off already (depending on how much he has used it.)

tom61 - You are right in principle, however I have looked at lots of old watch batteries, many years old, and they don't seem to leak (or hardly at all). AA and AAA's do. The batteries are face down, so if they do leak (they are very tiny cells) it will only go on the tact switch plastic, which will have no longterm effects.

illustriouschin - I have used the PDA a fair bit, in testing, etc, including games. The button tops are stuck on very securely to the surfaces and I see no reason for that to change. If you make what I did in the way I did it, you will see they are steadfast.

As I was recharging the batteries with the 5.05v PDA mains power, of course the batteries only charged to 5.05v, which isn't enough. I was expecting this to happen as others (inc Skyone) had warned me this would happen. Anyway, I bought a NiMH charger designed to take bulk battery packs (up to 10 cells), so I will use this to recharge the batteries when needed. As the cells are 2 x 4 cells, I will need presumably to set the charger to recharge 4 cells instead of 8.

I changed the wires and solder points on the switch on the PDA so when it is in in the on position it is running the PDA from the batteries, when in the other position (off) it will only run via mains, as the batteries are not connected, in this position the recharger can do its work. Irrespective of the switch position, inserting the mains power to the PDA will run the system off the mains. This means I can run the system off batteries, plug in the mains, turn off the batteries, and not stop the PDA working. :)

Pic of a game (I had been playing it prior to this photo).

This is where I have located the PDA, next to my monitor. Nice.
