I have a friend on Aol instant messenger and i'd like to talk to him but installing AIM didn't work for me. Are there any messengers that are like universal or could communicate with AIM?
Searching! What's that?

AIM lite, or miniaim.net. Miniaim is 67KB, but is a full-fledged AIM client.

I prefer Pidgin, personally.

I use Meebo if I'm not on my computer, best online client I've used. Used to use Pidgin, but I usually only talk to people on MSN, so I'm using Live Messenger, because it just works (ya, I know its lame). AFKIM for on my PSP.
You can log into AIM from web-based Gmail, so if you have a Gmail account you can do that (or get Gmail).

I haven't used Meebo, but I have heard it's good. I like Pidgin, probably because it came with Ubuntu.
I don't want to make an "I'm leaving" thread, but I've sort of lost interest in this board. So if you notice that I'm gone, that's why.

I use it in Ubuntu as well. The windows version seems to like to randomly disconnect from the AIM server and not tell you (silly open-source coders favoring Linux... Oh wait).
