Making an xbox portable.

Post by genrox »

Do you think it would be possible to make an xbox portable? To make it smaller maybe switch the hdd with a compact flash card with and ide adapter and make it modded to remove the need of a dvd drive. anyother suggestions for making it as small as possible?

All of that is possible, but it still leaves the console insanely large.

I don't think its worth doing, mabye a Slim Xbox would be more suitable.
the guys over at the xbox-scene forums would know more about it than I.

You can easily make an Xbox Laptop, but an Xbox portable just isn't that realistic. Take your Xbox, and hold it up like a Gameboy, and see how long you can hold it for. Thats how long you'll be able to play it.

And then theres the fact that the Xbox is a power guzzler, you'd need a lot of batteries to keep it going for any decent amount of time.

if is the standard IDE plugin for a laptop drive, then yes you could, but couldnt play Originals. or you could completly remove the everything but the mainboard of the diskdrivc and just wrap it in electrictape and you could FTP everything to the Xbox, games, movies, etc, but of course that requires a Mod of some sort.

Best I've seen is the Xbox Mini.

A laptop is definitely possible, a handheld not so much.

You could make a pretty good laptop but it would take some work. You could even put Linux on it, double the RAM and make it a little faster by doing a few other mods; then you could run emulators (all the way to N64).

How many gates does the FPGA have to have? I might be able to help a little with it.

Well, It is possible to make a lighter laptop out of an XBOX, I've taken mine apart (modded it) and from what I've seen it looks like this
  • a lot of plastic that can be taken out
The DVD Drive power cable is to say the least, weird.
The hard drive is just your standard IDE hard drive (10gig)
The power supply is just a small, two plug computer supply and is seperate from the main board
basically the motherboard is like a Micro ATX.
I added TWO USB ports two the 3rd and 4th controller ports, and they work (so i can use a flash drive to transfer files and such)
You can most likely get/make a liquid cooler (like Ben on his 360 laptop 1)
So, if you had the time, and some hacking knowledge (to make the HDD bigger, if you want an explanation of why hacking is required, just ask). It's not impossible.
