Simple NES Laptop Help

Post by Shoe32 »

Okay so I was thinking as my first hack I was going to make a VERY simple NES Laptop. I was just going to hook up a Mini DVD Player unto an NES and have it. The only problem is I know the NES comes with another cord that must be plugged in to an outlet to work. How can I get the NES power without having to have the laptop plugged in at all times? Sorry I know I am a noob... Thanks anyways.

How do I make them work I mean? I really dont know much on modding and I cant find one god damned tutorial that doesnt make me spend $300 to make a handheld. I dont want to buy a book at the moment nor tear up my wii/ps2 to make a laptop and accidently destroy it.

I don't remember exactly how much voltage a NES needs, probably around 7.5v like pretty much every console. All you need would be 5-6 AA batteries (the re-chargeable NiMh would be your best bet). Then all you'd have to do is either, cut open the power cord and wire the positive from the cord to the positive of the batteries, and likewise for the negative, or solder directly to the board.

The portable DVD player's battery might be a good battery too, what is its voltage and mAh?

The NES requires 5v, which can be acquired from a 7805 regulator.
Meh, I don't post much.

the nes needs 9 volts. Most famiclones take 6, but run on 5. Sorry if I'm wrong, but everyone starts somewhere. Except Ben. He was born with dremel and logic probe in hand.

The NES takes 5v. The 9 volts from the power brick is fed into a 7805, which outputs the necessary 5 volts into the NES mobo.

Actually I think that would be Kevin Horton. No offense to Ben but he knows a lot more about electronics.

Hi there! My first portable happened to be the EXACT same thing. What you do is find a plug that fits the nes power cord. Take the dvd player battery off the dvd player. Look at the connector. There is a + and a -. Shove the frayed end of the + cord from the plug into the + and the - end into the -. keep all pins exposed for the dvd player. tape it up with the pins still exposed but not touching from the new wiring. reconnect the battery, the cord will be coming out the back or side of the dvd player now. put that on nes, hook it all up, and viola, it works.

But it doesn't sound like he's going to take the NES apart (or solder in any way), so he needs 9v worth of batteries to make the NES work via the DC in jack.

As for the plan of using a DVD player as a screen, make sure it supports video input. Most of the units I've seen only output video so you can hook it up to a TV.
