DON'T use Gamecube screens. Horrible ghosting, chunky, and use a lot of power. You can get some good deals on PSone screens on eBay.

There is a big difference between welding and fabrication work and fiddly electronics soldering, the only similarity is melting metal onto metal. It's like driving a car vs a pushbike. Anyway, either he will be doing all the project himself or you will - hopefully you will, as this is where most of the fun is - making and creating the portable.
There are many guides on this forum, including mine. Spend a few hours and look at all the posts from the last couple of years, as I did, on this N64 forum. If you don't know how to solder, there are guides for that too. It amused me a while back when I looked at online guides on soldering - in the UK we say "solder", the USA say "sodder" - which has a very different meaning!! Ahem!
Do a lot of research, and when you start work, work slowly, methodically and double check everything you do. Make your case pretty!
