Hold the cardboard cutout next to the N64, then consider the screen, batteries, and controller.

Isn't sizing the case one of the easier parts? If you can't do that, you shouldn't be doing this at all..

Man, sometimes threads like this are just embarrassing. Partially with the grammar, but even arguing about grammar. Maybe I'm just getting too old for this site. :?

try using graph paper, it does make it a lot easier to to draw a symmetrical design. Also try making pieces of graph paper that are the size of the different mobos so that you can get an idea of how you can arrange everything and make it fit into a reasonably sized case.

Yeah, that's what saved me! (that, and anotherperson's Diagram, because when I designed my case, I had no motherboards at all...) Graph paper is very good to making symmetrical cases as well as accurate sizes (I think common graph paper is measured in cm, which is more accurate than inches...)

Come on guys at least he's trying to make a portable unlike others (me) he just needs to learn to scale his drawings and spend more time on them, he might be a expert frankencase designer in the making. :P

@ CTfan can have a cookie now please :lol:

Just want to add that without Firefox my spelling would be terrible.

Look as I once told by Spongebuell, " If you're not going to take the time to post properly why should we take the time to respond seriously?" I'm not sure if thats exactly what he said but you get the idea. That was pretty much enough to get me to start typing properly instead of like I was in a copulate chat room. Also the occasional grammatical error is fine but when someone can point out 9 errors in a line thats inexcusable.

A quick idea:
If you are going to make an N64p, why don't you try creating the portable first. After you are finished, you can decide how you are going to stuff it in a case. Designing your dream portable isn't going to help create it.

Why is this thread getting so much interest? Are people feeling guilty about their postings?? No disrespect intended, but all we have seen so far on it is a crayon drawing and a badly cut-out piece of paper of a design which won't work, as it would be painful to operate with the button locations as indicated and there is insufficient space for the mobos (eg the screen, etc). I'm not meaning any disrespect here, but let's put things into context.

Anyway, unless you have experience or have done extensive research, you will not know precisely how small to make a case (it is easy to make a big one, progressively harder as your case gets smaller), and even if you have done the homework, there are other variables to take into account whilst making the project which can affect the final case.

If this is a serious project, I wish you well with it and hope you every success: make the innards of the system work first; give considerable thought to the end result you want to achieve and what you want to achieve and post pics of the project as it progresses. If this isn't a project which will get of the ground, then it isn't a project at all and all we have is as per the first paragraph of this post...

Follow the many guides on this forum to make the guts of the system work; then worry about the case.

I have been working on this principle myself. Playing games like Banjo Kazooie have highlighted to me how accessible the Z button and the C buttons have to be for fluid gameplay - factors like this affect how you make the case ultimately; as well as comfort, weight, gripping, etc.

You know, I was wondering that myself. If this thread ends up getting more views then your n64p which will turn out good I think someone deserves to be beaten. Why is anyone helping this person after hes been told to think about this realistically? That's all that needs to be said and then he could think about how he could actually do this. I commend you bacteria for becoming the new daaguy in the sense of critisizing every idiot who makes a thread in the n64 forums :D The world would be a better place if we had more members who were willing to pwn n00bs when they deserve it.

It is only a case of keeping things real and relevant (otherwise this established N64 forum devalues itself into Forum 42 stuff). I am really interested in anything relevant on the N64 subject and will assist anyone with any advice I can offer, and do so; but where I get annoyed is with the sheer lack of meat on the bone; pointless postings only designed to keep the thread concerned at the top of the list, eg "I'm off camping today", "I'm back from camping" - not relevant to building an N64p in any shape or form but keeps things at the top of the list so more people view the topic (milking it is another example) - real updates, no matter how minor, but relevant to the actual progress/process of building an N64p, yes post it of course, that is what this forum is for (what I do). Also people who clearly aren't being realistic "I have a drawing of how I can make an Xbox 360 fit into a box the size of a postcard" is clearly a waste of time responding to and not serious, and pointless.

Perhaps i'm just a grumpy old git. :wink:

I'm not sure anyone other than the maker of this thread should post here anymore. I don't understand why he (or she) is getting bashed so much. They are obviously in the 8-12 year old range and therefor learn best from their own mistakes.

Discouraging him from a project he wants to work on is not the best way to go. Let him figure out that what he's doing is much harder than it looks, and offer helpful advice. It's been said that what he's doing is pointless, absurd, and at points idiotic, so let it go. The last thing we need in this forum is post after post of "YOU'RE STUPID TAKE AN ELECTRONICS COURSE OR DIE".

I also can't help but think his grammar (or lack of fixing) has something to do with the obvious "I am Holier Than Though" connotations.

Now for some helpful advice. I'll give you a short lesson on how this whole electronics thing works (which would have been very helpful to me when I first came here but it's knowledge I gradually picked up). First of all, a video game system is basically made up of a hard outside plastic case (mostly empty space inside for various reasons such as circulation and snazzy case design), and inside of that case is a motherboard. This is what makes the system work; in your case it should not be cut down at all.

You will also want to get used to the fact that you are at the complete mercy of your electronics. If they don't want to work, the whole project fails. You need to tend to their every need. Therefor, it is MUCH MUCH MUCH easier to get the electronics working (running the system off of batteries, connecting it to the screen, working with the controllers, etc.) BEFORE you design the case. This is mainly because if when you are wiring something doesn't work, it's not a huge deal because your complete case design doesn't suffer.

Here's what I suggest you do;

Figure out;

1. How to run it off Batteries,

2. Connect it to a screen

3. Connect it to controllers,

4. Make a case

Good Luck

I'm sorry for asking this but.
